Re: My 2006 R1200R has only covered 295 miles!
Hm... I guess I can't seem to get it right. The last time I followed the factory guidelines for the R12GS, in accordance with the manufacturer specs, I ended up having to stay with dyno until 12K. Even the mechanics at the BMW dealer told me that the factory recommendations are on the light side. Th...

Re: My 2006 R1200R has only covered 295 miles!
Be sure not to baby the 12R too much when you break it in. Accelerate hard from first gear (without picking up the front wheel) and make sure to do a lot of engine braking. The first 600 miles is critical to the run in because the factory has clamped down the head assembly for the break in process. ...

Re: Appropriate Cylinder head protection, FINALLY !
I've had these SW-Motech engine guards installed on my 12R about two month after I got the bike. I got baby back in 03/07. They've served me very well. They are great cruiser pegs without installing anything. Of course this is all dependent on you're height. I'm 5'9" with 30" inseam (all b...

Re: What grade gasoline are you using?
Most of the big name gas manufacturers (e.g. Chevron, Shell, Mobil, 76) put a cleaning agent into their premium gas. Most likely this is the reason for the dealer mentioning a tank full of premium once in a while. I haven't put anything other than premium in my 12r, but I did try mid grade a couple ...

Re: R1200R advice
I would have to disagree that the RR is lacking in cornering ability.... I quite regularly scrape the pegs on mine without really trying, and have no problem keeping up with crotch-rockets in twisties. I really don't even have to lean off either! -- INSTRUCTOR MODE ON -- Brakes: Always us...

Re: Tank capacity
Ha ha! Close, but not quite. It was a mix of up mountain and down mountain. There is a good enough mix that I can't say it was all down hill. Probably more down than up though.NeilS wrote:That's imperial gallons, right? And downhill with a tailwind?

Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*
Yup! Ordered mine from the Aussie place also. I'm surprised at how little effort is being made here in the US regarding R12R accessories. I've had the bike for 1 1/2 years and Australia is the only place that has bothered to make a 12R headlight cover. Go figure... Actually - not so. Aeroflow makes...

Re: Tank capacity
I don't know if it's just my riding style, but I get about 260-280 miles on 4.2-4.6 gallons in the city. On Hwy rides, I'm 300+ miles to the tank with panniers, trunk, and cooler. I've only managed this once but I got 339 miles with 4.8 gallons. I'm pretty light on the throttle as a whole so perhap...

Re: Tank capacity
So how fast are you riding to get 71 mpg? Mark I think the total for that one ride was either 245-250 miles. Oh sorry, misread the message. I think the average was 65 MPH. There were a lot of spots where I was doing 50-55 MPH because I was cutting through a National Park. They don't let you go too ...

Re: Tank capacity
On my 2009 R1200R I rode 280 miles until the computer said I was down to 8 miles. It took 4.586 gallons to fill it. How is it that people say they put in over 5 gallons when the literature says we have a 4.6 gallon tank? :-k It is interesting. The most I have ever put into my 12R is 5.2 gallons. At...

Re: R1200R advice
Oh, one other thing. It's nice to have the partially-linked brakes. This allows you to use all three brakes by simply pulling on the front brake lever. The F series bikes are regarded as entry level so they don't have this capability. This means you would have to brake with both front and rear at th...

Re: R1200R advice
I've ridden an '05 F650gs thumper, '05 R12GS, and now an '07 R12R. It really depends on what you're after. For me, the R12R is superior when it comes to long range and long distance riding. Fuel economy is not as good as the 650gs, but if you have a light throttle hand, the R12R still does pretty da...

Re: R12R not great on dirt roads
I was this close to getting that a week ago. Unfortunately, the other half of me had more balls than I did and won the argument. As a result, I had to settle for what I have right now (e.g. 12R) and not get a second bike. She said, "how often are you going to ride it? You're already paying insu...

Re: R12R not great on dirt roads
I agree. It's not the best dirt bike, but it does fine for me also. Taking my cues from Mr. ChiTown, I've also installed some Scorpion Syncs and taken the 12R off road. On pumice in Mammoth Lakes, CA for that fact. I don't know if you guys have ever experienced pumice, it's not quite like riding dir...
