Yup! Ordered mine from the Aussie place also. I'm surprised at how little effort is being made here in the US regarding R12R accessories. I've had the bike for 1 1/2 years and Australia is the only place that has bothered to make a 12R headlight cover. Go figure...

Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*
I hate our exchange rate vs. USD right now :-(
TwistedThrottle shipped my Givi PLX racks this week. Cost me a farking large pile of beans (about 500AUD) but these plus a big pile of AndyStrapz gear for both mine and the SO's bikes is still 700AUD cheaper than BMW racks + bags. I can't believe how much they charge for that crap. I could now add a pair of Givi hard bags and still have spent less than I would have on just teh BMW racks + bags + liners.
Headlight protector sounds good. Might order one before my headlight gets damaged. :-)

Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*
Hi, a couple a of weeks ago I found two craks on my headlight. Lot of internet search and bought the tankslapper decal; it´s a 3M decal, bla bla bla. The product it´s impossible to fit due to the wonderful headlight design / shape.
I wrote them complaining and thei said they will send me another piece, but I´m looking for a better product right now.

There are several places with a thick vinyl made to protect headlight lenses. I haven't tried it yet but here's one: http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/car ... x+17%22.do

I have had the Aussie guard for about a year and a half. It works fine and I never notice it is even there. I left the small cracks in the lens as they were and they are OK too.

Great info in this thread. I ordered the Australian one tonight -- $45.49 total. My Christmas present to my R1200R!

I received it on Dec. 24 -- not bad for shipping during holiday season. It's sitting on the R now, waiting to be installed.beegee wrote:Great info in this thread. I ordered the Australian one tonight -- $45.49 total. My Christmas present to my R1200R!

Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*
My headlight was cracked too, and when I took my bike in for service the R12 that they gave me for a loner had a crack in it too. The service man said that he ordered a warranty light for it and put it on my bike free of charge. This seems to be a manufacturing problem not a light that is prone to damage, I don't think that guards are going to help.
ASK WHY
Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*
Yeah - well my headlight protector is better than yours because I paid $67 (US) for it. (ordered about year ago when the US dollar was down).beegee wrote:Great info in this thread. I ordered the Australian one tonight -- $45.49 total. My Christmas present to my R1200R!
So someone tell me I got a better protector - please. I paid more, it's got to be better - right?

Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*
I noticed a small crack in the lens of my 07, and as it was not a hole yet, decided to arrest the damage.
Previously, I had applied a heavy clear plastic film to lens of last two bikes, and it worked great.
The BMW lens is not flat, but with much squeegeing using credit card and copious amounts of water got it to lay mostly flat.
At two spots I cut it slightly so it would conform, with only a small gap. It looked good, film was not visible.
Whoops- after a month I noticed a network of fine cracks had developed on lens- not all the way through, but over the entire surface. I took plastic film off. No other damage was visible, like a bigger impact. Lens seems to be structurally sound. I have to assume the heat built up somehow and degraded the plastic?? I run on high beams all the time, and it gets pretty warm.

I had the same network of fine cracks and I never put any protective film over my light - it is a manufacturing fault we have had quite a few here in South Africa and mine was replaced under warranty a short while back.

Same problem here and BMW replaced the lens under warranty just now. It was a material defect in the lens

That IS a good deal.
Those Vulcan 800 Studded leather saddle bags look like a bargain also.
I'll bet Don or one of the other clever types in this group could do something nice with one of those windscreens for sale at that site.

Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*
My headlight lens, after many years, has also developed the vertical crack on the left hand side.
Two questions:
1 - There's mention over at MOA that there's a SIB about free replacement of this item. Does anyone have any specific info about this?
2 - The clear lens does not appear on any fiche I've searched, so am I missing something? The Max BMW link above is dead. The closest thing I find is the headlight insert, but I can't tell if that includes the lens; does it? If it does, do I get the (these are MSRP) 220.77 one or the 175.87 one, which has the notation "LV/RHD?" My guess is that RHD = right hand drive.
TIA

Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*
The lens on my '11 cracked at less than 10k miles, if I remember correctly - thread is here: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=25104&hilit=headlight+lens. I asked about the SIB because I'd heard the same thing and the dealer told me no. I replaced the lens and put a Cee Bailey protector on there. It's ugly and lame but I generally forget it's there. It's also cheaper than the other one that appears to be the exact same thing.vroomr wrote:My headlight lens, after many years, has also developed the vertical crack on the left hand side.

Re: Cracked headlight lens *grumble*
Tankslapper.biz has a 3M film for the headlight. I bought that and the tank top and tank side kits. Very reasonable. Every bike I've owned gets the "slapper" kit.
