Re: Appropriate Cylinder head protection, FINALLY !
+1 on these! I put them on about a month ago and they just blend in perfectly. I get lots of compliments on them.

Alex,
Buy the bars, but wait on the pegs.
You don't even need highway pegs, you can rest your legs right on top of them and the V of the bars keeps your feet from sliding off. I bought the bars as leg rests first and fall over protection second.

They look pretty good.
Two questions...
Are those the original BMW protectors on under the new guards?
and Do you need to pull the guards to do maintenance on the valves etc.?
Good roads,

Ask not why we should do a thing; rather, ask why we should not.
Re: Appropriate Cylinder head protection, FINALLY !
1) In that picture the BMW guards are under the SW-Motech guards. But why? Isn't it like wearing a condom during phone sex?lewellen wrote:They look pretty good.

2) No, the valve cover come off without having to remove the SW-Motech (one would have to remove the BMW guards).

Re: Appropriate Cylinder head protection, FINALLY !
Here's one possibility: The bike was tipped over BEFORE the BMW guards were installed. The cylinder head cover is ugly without the plastic guard, and the owner is too cheap to buy another cover.OlyVR wrote:1) In that picture the BMW guards are under the SW-Motech guards. But why?
Don't ask me how I know

1. The protectors are the original plastic, useless, BMW headguards.
2. No, you can get to the heads without dismounting, although pulling them is not that big a deal.
3. Yes, it is kinda like using a condom, but remember we practice SAFE RIDING: ATGATT ! . Actually I was too lazy to pull them off again after the replacement of the Verholen cylinder protector ( part number 11059, R1200GS cylinder protection) which did not work.

Sure wish this thread had come along about 3 weeks ago, before I installed the Verholen pieces. Don't know what exactly I would have done instead, though. It wouldn't have been the BMW parts; they are useless. But it wouldn't have been these steel tubes either. I don't want to turn my R into a GS.
Re: Appropriate Cylinder head protection, FINALLY !
If you want the best of both, the Verholens should clear the bars.RonR wrote:Sure wish this thread had come along about 3 weeks ago, before I installed the Verholen pieces. Hi: Like I said in my installation notes before the crash, they look good, and would apparently work better than the plastic stuff BMW sells. My dump kind of disproved the ability to stop damage at low speed, thus I went to the tube protectors. BMW is very, very proud of those nice rocker arm covers in magnesium. You don't want to have to buy one after they get squashed. Trust me on this.
Actually these are the only head guards that I have seen so far that actually look like an OEM setup (at least in the black power coat). They most definitely do not make the bike look like a GS, and solve mounting problems for additional driving lights, and also make grand foot rests, which beats the heck out of trying to rest your boot heel on the top of the cylinder and not touching the exhaust manifold!

Re: Appropriate Cylinder head protection, FINALLY !
Can you post any images of the protection with the rest of bike in it. Looking at these and twisedthrottle's pics, its hard to see how the bars look with the rest of the bike. Thanks alot! Looks very tempting.

Re: Appropriate Cylinder head protection, FINALLY !
Do these bolt on anywhere to the engine or is it purely a frame mount? On my airhead they are frame mount and currently I have the BMW plastic ones on my '07. I am concerned about bolting to the motor because as in those pics of the Verholens bolting straight to the motor is risky business.
Re: Appropriate Cylinder head protection, FINALLY !
Here are the photos requested, and the mounting specifics directly off the SW-MOTECH instruction sheet. They definitely do not make the bike look like a GS!
The mount is to the engine itself, in strong points. Remember that the case itself is a stressed member and is very strong as a result.
The windscreen is the CalSci "Large" 22" which is to me functionally equivalent to the 20" CeeBailey. I am going to trade this in on the taller one as I am still getting helmet buffet on the top of my head.
Here is the mounting instruction diagram:

Kind of look like Stunter Crash Bars.
but I'll probably get a set for touring.

Re: Appropriate Cylinder head protection, FINALLY !
Serious question from someone still waiting on the r1200r on order:
If I install a set of these (and I really think they'll look good with the black paint) on my new bike, when I drop it (not if...) will I only scratch these and the bar end weights?
If so, they are a bargain...

The outcome probably depends a lot on how you drop it. My dump was a snap roll apparently caused by some fine sand. The CeeBailey screen got hit at about the 2 o'clock position and shattered, and the Verholen protectors noted above did not protect the upper part of the rocker arm covers. The curious thing to me is that the "heavy" Throttlemeister on the right handlebar did not touch the ground at all. Maybe it has something to do with my helmet and right shoulder crashing first
I would invest in these again in a blink of the eye, although I have no intention of repeating the experiment to see if they really work!
