Topboxes
I have been thinking of moving on to another bike from the R12R. However, I recently thought that I should keep it. [Give me a couple more weeks and I will think different again.] I only need to improve it a little. I recently rented a bike with a topbox and that reminded me that I do find them hand...

Re: Another day.. another recall..
dont have the damper on my bike, it was broken when I bought it and really havent noticed any problems by not having it, anyone else not using one?. This is the first BMW I've had that has had one fitted On a ride last year I was glad the bike had a steering damper. I was going a bit fast on a coun...

I did the same and I like it. No changes required in the cables. However, the turn signal levers will touch the tank on nearly full deflection.

Calsci windscreen
I know there have been a FEW threads on windscreens -- why not start another? I ordered the medium height based on my height and inseam. Didn't work, too low. Calsci recommended I use a cardboard extension to check how much taller I would need. That test indicated the X-Large would work, so I bought...

Re: R1200R fit for taller riders.
I'm a bit over 6' with a 34" inseam and 36" arms. I have a Rick Mayer seat made the same height as the tall seat. My legs are fine. I put the handlebar from a F800ST on the bike; it had to have a 1" riser under it so the grips would (almost) clear the tank. The stock handlebar puts th...

Re: Undertail exhaust: can this be done?
I was just wondering if anyone has tried this. I seem to recall that someone here did this to an R1150R. Why would you want to? You lose underseat storage room and, at least by my experience, its like sitting on a BBQ. With one of those, you don't need to look at your tach. If your butt is cool, th...

OTOH, I might try this one, too.

Re: YOU YANKEE RIDERS
What can be another big factor is ergos. If the peg/seat relationship puts the knees too high, then all the weight on your seat is on the sit bones (not good for my bony butt). With the knees down a ways (via taller seat or lowered pegs) then the thighs take the weight, too. I had one bike that give...

Re: Need Seat advice
The tall seat option still didn't work for me; it was too narrow and peaked in the center. A RIck Mayer seat -- with the height equivalent to the tall seat option -- does work for me. See the thread on handlebar and mirror replacement for pics.

Re: New handlebar and mirrors
l: The RM seat is sort of custom made. I sent them pics of me on the bike and they made the seat off of that. Not a complete custom fitting, but it works. You must have such saddlemaker in IT -- maybe they don't advertise? f: I have rotated the bar forward about 15 degrees. This permits more turn an...

Re: New handlebar and mirrors
In no particular order: 1) The VT is for Virginia Tech. I have a son attending there now. 2) The RM seat is a lot more comfortable than stock. The stock seat, like most, is too narrow for me. This is also the same height as the tall seat, which helps my knees and hips. 3) The shop had the bar risers...

New handlebar and mirrors
After over a year I decided that the sit-up-and-beg ergos of the R12R was too upright for me. I had the handlebar replaced with one from an F800ST. Turned out bar risers were needed with the new handlebar, or the handlebar would hit the tank way too soon. The height of the grips is still well below ...

brake recall
I had arranged to take my bike in anyway (replacing the handlebar with one from an F800ST), thought I'd check on recalls. Both the antenna ring and the brake recall apply to mine. I had heard that the brake recall was just replacing the front brake line. NOOOOOOOOO. Procedure: Remove gas tank; repla...

Re: The Case of the Missing Case
I will also look into a retaining clip, since I have been concerned with the slight movement of the cases on the mount. I will also place a name tag with contact info on the inner aspect of the outside of the bag; inconspicuous while the bags are mounted, but obvious if someone picks up a stray one.

Re: GPS choices
I bought the 60CSX for my KLR, the theory being that if I was on a dual sport ride and had to hike out for whatever reason, a battery operated handheld works for 10+ hours on 2 AA cells. I have since added the handlebar mount on the R and used it last weekend. If it works, how can you argue with it...

Re: Dealer overservicing bikes
That was uncalled for. BMW is careful about specifying what must be done and when (600 miles, 12k, 24k, annual), so when you say, "12k service" it should mean what is in the manual. Anything beyond that must be approved. Given your situation, it seems better to take the refund and give the...

I do. That means more aftermarket manufacturers will make farkles specifically for the R12R.

Re: F800ST handlebar
The service manager did not have the prices on hand. He did know the heated grips (on my bike) would not be an issue since the wires for those run external to the bars. I will have the work done in mid-July. He told me the shop has been swamped with bikes people haven't ridden in years. It looks lik...

Re: F800ST handlebar
Thanks for the tip about the Rockster, I forgot about it. However, I think I'll stick with the F800ST bar. There was a F800ST next to a R1200R on the showroom floor, so I was able to get an idea of how the new bar would shift the ergos; probably about the best sense of it short of putting the new ba...
