brake recall

Post by DrD »

I had arranged to take my bike in anyway (replacing the handlebar with one from an F800ST), thought I'd check on recalls. Both the antenna ring and the brake recall apply to mine. I had heard that the brake recall was just replacing the front brake line. NOOOOOOOOO. Procedure: Remove gas tank; replace all the solid tubes touching the ABS unit; replace tank. Turns out someone at the factory didn't know how to properly swage solid tubes. The procedure takes 3+ hours.

When you get the brake lines replaced, I advise to check them very closely every ride. My breaklines were replaced on the 3rd of July and started leaking on the 9th. I was very happy to only be about 1 mile from home and an uphill ride. I was about 100 miles away over the weekend...that would have been bad!

All is better now, the dealership will re-paint my fairing in the winter when I am not riding so much.

Not to steel your thread but does this brake line recall affect bikes without ABS? I don't have ABS on mine so before I go in to the dealer I am curious. :D

No mention of ABS or NON

Recall Number: 08V254000
Summary:
BMW IS RECALLING 3,248 MY 2007-2008 R1200R, MY 2006-2007 R1200 GS AND MY 2007 R1200 ST MOTORCYCLES. DUE TO THE CURRENT ROUTING OF THE FRONT BRAKE LINES, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT DURING RIDING, THE BRAKE LINES COULD BE UNDER STRAIN. IF THE VIBRATION/STRAIN IS SIGNIFICANT, THE BRAKE LINES COULD SPLIT AND START TO DEVELOP A LEAK. IF THE LEAK BECAME SIGNIFICANT, BRAKE FLUID COULD ESCAPE. IF THIS HAPPENED, THE LEVEL OF FLUID IN THE RESERVOIR OF THE FRONT BRAKE SYSTEM COULD DROP.
Consequence:
IF FLUID LEVEL DROPS SIGNIFICANTLY, THE FRONT BRAKES COULD FAIL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND INSTALL NEW BRAKE LINES WITH A MODIFIED ROUTING FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JUNE 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
Notes:
CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.

Dang! I got the notice today. I haven't noticed any problems at all. I'll do it at the next service interval in a couple of months.
