Clutch problem
Ok I' having problem with my little bike.
Each time that I want to go faster, let say i'm in 4th gear, going 125 KM/h, when give some gas, my RPM jumps from 4000 to 7500rpm in a second and no accelelration. Ok then I just shift gear, and same result. It's like if my Transmission slips.
It is kind of scary when you see your RPM going this high and you still going at the same speed.
Don't know if you understand, but I do know that I have a problem. I have only 20000 k on my 2003 R1150r.
Thanks.

either your clutch slave is leaking and migrating up the release rod, or you have a leaking rear crank, or trans input shaft seal.
pull the starter motor off and look in the bell housing for moistness, if you can tell the difference in smell between engine oil/gear lube/hydraulic oil, there's the culprit...then open it up and fix it. while you're in there, grease the splines.
are you still under warranty? if not, get your wallet ready.

Yes i'm still under warranty....but this pisses me of. Not event 25000k on it and already clutch problem....modre wrote:either your clutch slave is leaking and migrating up the release rod, or you have a leaking rear crank, or trans input shaft seal.

I bought the R1150 for its boxer, and name. But looks like I'm kind of bitter about it. $18800 for a bike, I think part should last a little longer.

Is this happening with just the Canadian models?Mrhappy wrote:Yes i'm still under warranty....but this pisses me of. I saw all the spline issues on the net and got nervous...I tore my '02 RT down at 14,700 miles...splines were good, but my slave was weeping...I was 2 weeks out of warranty and the dealer wouldn't stand behind it...pissed me off as well...a primo pricey brand with BS...I bought the $86 slave, but that dealer lost me as a customer, and I'm not flag waving gung ho on BMW...but it's still a nice enough bike...I'm not ready to bail yet. That reputation can't be all smoke and mirrors. I did find vacuum leaks on both side rubber connections between the TBs and the heads. This winter I want to do the throttle stops and do the 0-0 to see how close they set it up...and see if I can't smooth this $17K machine out to where I expect it to be. I'm pretty sure it CAN be set up right, but I'm not sure they did it originally...and I don't believe (yet) it needs a techlusion FI control to run right. I have 21K on it now.
I tore my brother's '99 S down after that for a look-see (about the same milage) and his splines and slave were good...so it's not every bike. what I found in my slave was an egg-shaped wear...I kept it and am keeping my eye out for the 17 cent seal to rebuild it at some point. What I don't like is the bearing that spins constantly with crap for lube and a chore to get at.
I've also seen a few too many crank and input seal failures as well as final drive failures on the net for my liking...I'm wondering if these guys are beating the machines...I ride mine fairly easy.
since this stuff isn't cheap to fix, if you're not comfortable with it, there are plenty of other brands...look at the new Triumphs...the Tiger especially grabs me.
see what the dealer intends to do uneder warranty to satisfy you before you make any hasty moves. I still hear of 200K mile bikes...so until I get more batter info, the jury's still out.

Mrhappy,
I'd suspect the hydraulic release system first and need to ask some easy questions:
1-- Has the bike fallen over on the leftside, possibly bending the clutch lever slightly?
2-- Do you have GS HandGuards on and is the clutch lever contacting the Guard bottom?
3-- Has the clutch release fluid been fully purged and replaced on schedule?
4-- Is your engine using/burning excessive oil or leaking oil?
5-- Has anyone ever told you that you slip the clutch too much?
Inquiring wrenches want to know.

#1- yes....and was repaired by BMW...changed lever, and 6 months later, they changed everything on the left side, as the screw that hold the clutch and reservoir broke.
#2 : no
#3- I have to verify with my service guy, don't know.
#4- yes, a lot. And I need to change oil.
#5- never, i Barely play with my clutch....hé I'm not stupid...I'm old.
Finally, BMW verified, and my clutch is totally finished. I'm meeting with them on next tuesday, they want to verify something with me. What I think his they want to tell me that it is my fault...ya right.CycleRob wrote:Mrhappy,
Your low "mileage" of 20,000km (12,427mi) without clutch abuse -and- high oil useage all points to the rear crankshaft seal leaking oil and contaminating the clutch. You have a warrantee fix there.
But they will pass it under warranty anyway....which is good news, the rest I really don't care.
Still I'm very Disappointed about BMW'S products. We pay a lot of money for these bikes, and I find that it is not that solid has a bike. I Broke 3 flashers, backlite, left side handle (clutch level and all the tralala), 2 broken nuts, one back wheel, 2 sets of spark plugs, and now a clutch.
Only the clutch and left side handle that went under warranty.....
You know you pay $18800.00 for a bike , you expect to be solid
