One of the bicycle computers I can recommend you stay away from is a Panoram...
They looked cool, and I wanted one... Despite the fact my good buddy Doug told me about his having two, and both of them failing in a relatively short period.
So, not heeding his warning I got one... Worked pretty good for about 8 or 9 months. Lots of functions, and even a backlight. But one day it just quit working... Fiddled and messed with it for hours. Replaced the magnet on the wheel. Replaced the battery. Checked wiring. Everything. It's just dead.
Essentially that means I know of three that were sold, and all three have failed. Not a very good track record.
I haven't gotten another one ot replace it, but the same buddy, Doug, has now had Sigma's on three different bikes, and he loves those. His favorites are the BC800 and BC1200.
Hope this helps!
Cheers!

I think you'll find it varies with different brand tires and even worn vs new tires...just put a chalk mark on the center and roll it along the ground...and measure the two marks left on the ground..that'll do it.What is the diameter of the front tire??
Cat eye used to be a good brand...there's heaps of different brands out there...someone here once said the wire-less type will not work..shame about that.

My Cateye Astrale 8 currently has 10,192 miles registered on it - reset it to 0 for my new bike in March. Had about 15,000 on it from the last bike. Still the same battery.
Been using them for years now. In the day time I use it as the primary speed device - my eyes are no longer that good and the large digital readout is accurate.
Measure the tire yourself - as DJ said or, a tape around it.
Research unit one you want carefully - some only register to 65mph. The Astrale 8 will record to 185mph.
I mounterd the magnet on the brake disc. Drilled a 1mm hole, tapped it, loctited the thread and that is it.

I've had a Sigma "Sport/Targa" on my 'R for over 45k miles, and it's been absolutely reliable and accurate. I've done 2 "Saddlesore 1000's" and it was very useful, nice to have an additional tripmeter. I went to Radio Shack and got some rare earth magnets (little tiny round ones) and installed one in the head of a brake disc mounting bolt for the sensor- works fine!
If you take care in calibrating the Sigma, they're pretty accurate. My 1st Saddlesore was 1016.3 miles by the Sigma, 1047 by the 'R's odometer. The certificate issued by the IBA says 1018 miles, and they use a couple of mapping programs to verify your log. The second one was 1010.4 per the Sigma, 1041 per the odo, and 1010 on the certificate.
Hope that helps, did I win the plasma TV?
