Compared to the 1200GS.........look for the "sooner than you think" to be here R1200S...... to have T Bodies increased 6mm in diameter......the intake cams to open 3 degrees sooner and stay open 11 degrees longer.........13 to one compression ratio.........variable injection timing..............inline, rather than canister type, Cat Converter.......first BMW twin to come geared for above 150 in top gear.

Just my goofy opinion, but THAT is a thing of beauty! Now I am torn when it comes to my favorite BMW aesthetic; for me, I don't know what I like more, the R1200S or the HP-1. Of course, I like the looks of the K1200R, so that says something about my sensibilities. I found a cool R1200S project bike on this webpage:

otto.de-blog.jp/ stgx/motor_cycle/

About 3/4 down the page there is an article titled "R1200S Debut ??????" It shows some of the early R1200S concepts, and a slick monochrome number that is sharp!

Love the side view. Front view is OK. Not too thrilled about the back because I'm not a fan of underseat exhaust.

209-kg equates to 460-lbs. Is that wet, ready-to-roll-fuel-included weight? If it is, then it's not bad. If it's not then it will still be hefty when compared to other sport bikes. How much oomph? Rumored to be 120-hp, so if that's the case then maybe we're lucky to see around 100-hp at the rear wheel.

I still like it and I definitely will want it.

I like it also and think its one of the better looking in the line. I wish the seat was a little less sport bike is for the passenger. Wonder if there will be any other seat option. Perhaps one a bit more sporty than the r1150r but very capable of two up.

A solid color option would be good to. I'll take it. Finally, a boxer with a bit more GRRRRRRRR, but still a boxer. Merry Christmas

First, the ST/RT R1200 Boxer engine is rated at 110 HP and dynos depending on the dyno at between 98.5 and 104 RWHP. The new R1200S is rated at 125 HP, 15 more so it would logically follow thatyou could see rear wheel HP's in the 115 range stock. by adding a full Remus, I wouldn't be suprised to see a RWHP in the 120 range. My gut feeling is that the new R1200S is going to be quiet good.

They're around $16-17K. No comparision between bikes however, two different types of animals.

Er, I'm going to disagree with others here and say that I think this is a rather ugly bike. The R1100S was far better looking IMO.

I think the R1200GS is by far the best looking bike with the new hex head motor. The RT is next in the aesthetic line in my eyes.

When I conjected about the price of the new R-1200-S being in the $16.5 to $17.5 thousand range you said:
How much is a Duc 999?
If I recall correctly, there are basically three levels of Ducati 999...

The "standard" 999 at an MSRP of $17,995.00 (mono or biposto). This one has Showa suspension, plastic bodywork, etc.

The 999-S, which goes for an MSRP of $22,995.00 (monoposto only). This one has Ohlins suspension F&R, and some carbon bodywork, etc.

Then there is the 999-R that goes for $29,995.00 (monoposto only). This is the one the race Superbikes are based on, with the shorter stroke 999cc engine (the others are actually 998cc), all carbon fiber bodywork, 150 HP out of the box, Ohlins premium Superbike suspension F&R, the BIG brembo brakes (like on Moto GP mounts), Marchesini magnesium wheels, etc.

However, you honestly don't think that this new BMW R-1200-S has either the power or agility to go Duc hunting, do you?

Even with nearly a 200cc displacement advantage over the Ducati chances are the Ducati will dance rings around the new Beemer in the twisties, and most certainly on the race track... Even the base model Duc 999 should handle the R-1200-S easily, and they should be direct cost competitors.

Despite BMW best efforts, the Hexhead engine is still a bit of a lump compared to the Ducati V-twin, and it is doubtful the Beemer tranny can match the Duc's in operation with all the Beemer's flywheel effect, etc.

Much as I hate to say it, I believe Honda RC-51's, Aprilia Mille's, Ducati 999's, etc. will consume the new BMW R-1200-S like a light breakfast snack...

Just my two shillings...

Cheers!
