oil/fluids in the R1200R..
Ok, trying to get a handle on all the different areas where fluids are in use on this bike, the owners manual doesn't seem to be too detailed on this.

but what about the transmission, this is a dry clutch, right? but what sort of gear oil is there in the gearbox? is it synthetic? and what about the final drive? I'm curious if these are synthetic fluids from the factory, and if not, has anyone switch over to a synthetic for better wear protection?

Both the transmission and final drive use synthetic gear oil. The final drive calls for 180 ML of G5 rated 75W90 and the transmission uses 75W140. This info is valid for my 08 R; there have been some changes for the FD oil volume in later models. I'll bet you a quart of 75W140 synthetic of gear oil that this info is in your owner's manual.

Thanks for the info. I double checked and even searched the PDF version. No mentin of gear oil.MTBeemer wrote:I'll bet you a quart of 75W140 synthetic of gear oil that this info is in your owner's manual.
Newer owners manuals are VERY dumbed down these days I find.

If you are thinking of doing some or all of your maintenance then check out the DIY library over in the Hexhead section of the BMWMOA forum: http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/forumdispla ... ysprune=-1
Good info that is well presented and kept current. You can also communicate directly with the authors.

Just a note on the final drive. My dealer told me that if you do your own final drive make sure you don't go over the specified amount. If your measurement is off it is better to be under rather than over or you risk blowing the seal.
