Battery/ Brake Light

Post by jkhomes »

My Brake Failure warning light has started to flash when I start up the bike. It usually stops once I get around the block. I called the service dept at the dealership, and they thought I might have gotten air in the lines.

The ABS on my 97 RT was really sensitive to electrical issues. The light would flash a lot if the battery was starting to go bad. The battery on my 1200R is about 4 years old, and I am expecting to need a new one soon.

Has anyone had experience with the brake warning light as a precursor to batter failure?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a flashing abs sensor is a feature until you get rolling.

Yeah Woland, you are right. But this was more than usual. Brakes are working fine, but that light sure made me nervous.

The brake warning light warns also if the rear brake light it out. It will still appear to be OK since the ZFE then switches the running bulb over to 1/2 power and full power to work as a brake light.

This is a case where a GS-911 would probably lead you to the cause. It might just be a weak battery, but once the bike is running, the alternator should provide enough voltage for the ABS system to complete it's self-check.

Follow up. I left the bike off the battery tender for a week and half. Went to start it and the engine would not turn over, so now here I am on a Sunday afternoon instead of out riding.

Based on Mythbuster or other semi-scientific methods, I would have to say the brake light situation is a definite "possible."

Got a $69 Motobatt from Amazon.com on the way!
