2011 R1200R oil drain....Metric Hex or Torx?

Searching the threads leaves me a bit confused. Maybe model years differ?

Some suggest they used a Torx bit..others indicate a 8mm or so metric hex.

Do I need a big Torx bit to change the oil on my R1200R?

Thanks...I'm ready for my first oil change. For some reason I REALLY like

Well...."computer" is here with me at work. The bike is at home waiting on an Oil change. K75C here with me today
uses a Metric bit, no need to go take a look at that as I have been draining that old lady for 26 years now.

See I was going to stop at Sears on the way home for that "T50" hex bit if I REALLY needed it.

You would most likely be better off buying a 3/8 drive Torx set at Sears for less than $10.

I have several, maybe 4, Torx driver sets but none of them go higher than "T45".. I will check out the sets/vs the "bit"
prices when I am there. That set looks like the ticket! Thanks!!

You'll need the torx set for other things, but last time I changed my oil I used an 8mm Allen because what I see is no torx.

Ok Harald - you made me go out in the garage, drop the skid plate, get a flashlight and check the drain plug. It's definitely a T50, but a 8mm Allen wrench will fit and work (kind of) at least for a while. Did you try a T50 in the plug?
I had to check because the maintenance log I keep shows the fill plug on the transmission as a 8mm Hex (which it is) and the oil drain as a T50 and I thought maybe I flipped the information. I think the transmission fill plug is the only hex type bolt/plug on the bike.

So it looks like the only way to tell what you have is to slide under and take a look.

Got the Sears 3/8" drive torx set... It does go up to T50 and that IS just what
I needed for the Crankcase drain on my 2011 R1200R. I am good to go.

Notice how the corners of that hex are cut 'deeper' than nessesary. Not just the angle needed to make the hexagon, but deeper. That is how my plug looks, and it will accept a T50 Torx bit. It seems to be some kind of a "dual" machined recess. It is NOT the same as other T50 fasteners on my bike and NOT the same as the drain on my old K75C which will accept 8mm hex but not a Torx bit.

My '11 1200R takes an 8mm hex (allen)driver. The T50 also fits, but I think the hex driver is a better fit.
