has anyone installed HID on their R1200R?

I have a 1off can-bus compatible H11 HID kit in hand, but am a little apprehensive about installing it "blind". I've put HID's in 4 cars over the years, but never on a brand new '12 R1200R. The lack of farings limits where I can hide the ballast, so I'm hoping someone here might have some suggestions. Thanks!

I made enquiries with BMW about getting it done, and they told me that the R12R would not be able to tolerate the load at start up. So I didn't bother.

But then again, BMW would say that. I know plenty of BMWs with HIDs, just not R12R's

Personally, the fewer HID equipped vehicles on our roads the better. They are a menace to other drivers but great for the user.

However, the more veheicles that have them the more one needs them oneself to counteract the glare.

I had a set of the Trail Tech HID lamps on my RR and had no problem with canbus because I wired them through a separate circuit directly to the battery. That solves a lot of the canbus problems for many of us. It is not a big deal to do this with a small relay triggered by the headlamp switch and is a simple wiring setup:





This diagram shows the switching voltage to the relay wired to the high beam circuit in the headlight wiring harness, so will work with the high beam switch. If you are converting the low beam lamp, wire the switching pickup wire to the low beam +12VDC circuit wire, or any convenient switched 12 v circuit you can locate, since it is on whenever the bike ignition is turned on.

This wiring setup can be used to switch anything with higher current than CANBUS will allow, and I actually have a small fuse block set up to be a switched power center using a relay like shown. Makes life a lot easier on these bikes !

I could not disagree with this more. A properly aimed HID headlight has no affect on oncoming vehicles. Here in NY, at any given moment, at least 5 out of 10 cars appear to have HID's, and the most offensive lights are typically coming from cars that should not have them... (i.e., a 1987 Sentra with purple headlights) - These are amatur installed, poorly aimed "ghetto blasters" for lack of a better description. Factory HID's are perfectly fine. Well aimed aftermarket's are fine. I just finished my install on Sat, and spent time making sure mine was aimed correctly.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I certainly am not taking it personally, but I don't agree at all.

Regarding the can-bus not being able to handle the startup, I haven't seen that at all. My 1offmotorsports.com H11 kit went in relatively easily, no warning codes, and it lit up every time.

I'll post a more in-depth write up on the install tomorrow.
