R1150RT Smooth acceleration - NOT

Post by Spiney »

I have a 2004 RT and has just undergone a head reset, new iridium plugs, new TPS, major service and yet it still has an irregular pull when you open the throttle fully.
I doubt its fuel related as I've got thru several tanks since.
Apart from throwing a bank at it, BMW seem to have run out of ideas.
Has anyone else experienced this unsmooth acceleration? Normal running with moderate acceleration seems quite normal.
Thanks in advance.

What do you mean? Bike stutters? Flat spot or dip in the torque curve? Hesitation when throttle is opened?

Hi there,
I could say ... 'all of the above'!!
Blipping the throttle when not under load seems normal.
There is no noticeable drop off in revs at gear changes.
When you twist the throttle for 'normal' easy acceleration, there appears only a very very slight hesitation in response, not enough to be concerned about. I'd guess the issue is still there but its not that noticeable or dangerous.
What is a concern is if you need rapid acceleration, twist the throttle quickly and fully, thats when the issue is more noticeable and worrying.
Under these circumstances, if 'normal' performance is a straight rising graph line then this bike turns that slope into a staircase!
The issue is most noticeable around midrange, 3.5-4.5k revs.

I too hate to throw $$$ at a problem that can't be sorted out by a dealer. Any luck yet?

Grrrrr......no luck. I waited and waited for the 90k service and had a new o2 sensor fitted.
The bike is a dream for a couple of hundred K before the problem reappears.
I've noticed that until it reaches normal operating temperature, it intermittently (variable period of seconds) misses a beat and will stall if the revs drop below 1k.
If when cold, I hold the revs at around 2k, you can hear/feel this 'miss'. I sspect this 'miss' is there all the time but not as eveident when not holt and not under load. I believe the coil has been swapped out at some stage. The bike was in the garage for 3 days for its 90k service but they only charged me for a standard service.
Any ideas anyone?

Have you done throttle body sync?
My experience with dealers{ I worked at on 16yrs} is they will always do the minimum to get the bike out the door.
If the valves have been set, inj cleaner run thru, the vacuum between TB may be off.
Search forum for TB sync and you can see how easy it is to do. Makes a huge diff.

After a major service at 90k, I dropped the bike back (at 93k) for a TB sync check as its again hestitant on acceeleration and intermittently missing a beat. The TB sync apparently was fine so I had them replace all throttle cables.
Now, after riding for a week, the acceleration is again hestitant..... put graphically, instead of firing -----------, its more like ---.-----.--.------.--------.--- but varies considerably without rhyme or reason. If that makes sense!
In the last year, its had a head rebuild and new rings to bring compression up to spec, the O2 sensor, ignition coils, leads and TPS and now throttle cables replaced.

Hello,
Mine did this and I found the primary stick coils were bad. Now it runs as smooth as silk.

I will second that. A known problem, not a cheap fix but you have already poured a bunch of money into this problem.

Problem solved.
I took the bike to a real mechanic and he traced the fault back to a broken LT wire (green/black I think he said) in the loom under the tank.
Apparently the loom containing this wire does a 180 turn on itself on the left hand side just before it crosses over to the right side of the bike on its way to the primary plugs to which no power was being delivered.
The bike was only running on the secondary plugs!
So it would seem that this could be another incidence of the builders being over zealous with the wire ties.
