Street Drag Racing Anyone ???

I grew up street racing. In the early years it was mostly drag racing. I still know and ride with all the same old buddys from HS, graduation year 1972 !!!

I have one friend with a Kawasaki 650r, of which in a street drag I ran away from him so quickly it was laughable. Now I have another old bud with an 07 FZ6 Yamaha. He's a pushy guy (a.k.a. smart arse) who won't let an evening go without pestering me to drag race him. He just can't wait to "Blow my POS Bum-W off the road".

I love a good drag race, win or loose. Just wondering if any you guys do any and if so what have you run against and have you taken on an FZ6 ?

Drag racing on any BMW is like taking a hooker to the prom.. somehow she just doesn't fit in (except mebbe the new S1000RR.. and even then..) and that's not really what you got her for..

Oops ! Sorry. I own a 2010 R1200R.

Hard to say about the R1200R and a Yamaha FZ6. Only a race will tell for sure. Of course I'm referring to street racing on relatively stock bikes. I can't find current figures for either bike. I've found 11.5 & 11.4 for previous years of FZ6's. I found an 11.3 on a 2006 R1200R at MCN and that was on an R1200R they dyno'ed at 97 hp. My butt dyno tells me the R1200R will easily be in the 11's, but how deep ? The way I blew off the Kaw 650r, which should run a 12.1, suggests the R1200R is deep in the 11's.

Anything with an engine placed on a frame with wheels is right and proper for drag racing. Whomever had the idea that a boxer isn't proper for drag racing is just plain chicken. When I grew up, any time two reasonably competative vehicles were first at a red light, they drag raced. Even today when I'm out riding I'm hunting. I'm hunting for the next opportunity to drag from off a stop light. Sadly, today, you can pull up next to a bike, blip your throttle a couple times, and the guy on the bike next to you won't know what your telegraphing. Sad. The last drag race I got was from a GIRL in a Mustang. Ha ! Good for her !!!

With all the inherent slop in the R1200R drive train, repeated 8K launches off the line would be something to see. Would most likely add a lot of fuel to the BMW rear drive failure legend.

If I was doing a list of drag bikes I don't even think the R1200R would be in the top five. Using a BMW for a drag bike would be like hooking a thoroughbred to a plow (IMHO ).

Slop in your drive train !!!! I don't have any slop in my drive train. I think you might want to take you beamer to a dealership mechanic.

And, I said street racing...you know...with what you have....just for fun.....I don't mean turn around and perform eight runs until your clutch fries !!! I mean a pop from one stop light to another, or if your luck something close to a 1/4 mile.

Also, you don't have to dog your bike to street drag. 8k !!! Jezzz.... that's redline and probably not where your max torque is located anyway. From the curves i've seen the torque peaks at 6k. I'm talking street racing on relatively stock bikes (maybe an aftermarket pipe and some sproket change on chain bikes).

Over the past 45 years i've become an expert at taking a bike off the line, both on the street and at the track. In a street race on the R1200R I'd probably blip it up to 6k with a very smooth and quick clutch relaease. I'm pretty sure that's all the bike will take without going airborne anyway. What I call a granny-start. I'd probably shift before redline depending on how much drop in rpms occur and puts me back on 6k for max torque.

I've had a few cars want to race me from a stop light. A guy in an M3 challenged me once. I let him have a head start but I still easily passed him.

I can hold off my buddys Suzuki GSXR750 till the top of 3rd gear then he is gone usually in the 100 mph range

And your buddys GSXR topping out at 182 mph is something else....it has to modified ?

Wow ! And this is the bike you hold off up to 100 mph with you R1200R. Thats pretty good.

Anyone street drag any other bikes ????

Even though I own a Harley as well, I do enjoy reeling in some poser on his new shiny glide and toying with his pride. It reminds me of the smell of napalm in the morning, smells like "Victory"
