Cold weather warm-up time?

Post by decimus »

I'm riding my '96 R1100R year round here in Colorado, and needless to say, it gets pretty cold.
Does anybody know how long I should let her warm up before heading off to work (less than 5 mi. away)? :-k
Thanks!

Recommend to start and ride - if the aircooled motor idles to long you could melt out the old window or hasten failure of the hall sensor wiring (worst case)

start and ride slowly to warm up

Let her warm up to at least 65° C oil temp. You don't know when? Search for "cyclerob" in any of the internet search engines and install yourself an oil thermometer.

That's what I did and it works great.

Start it, with the throttle advance lever pushed over.
When it starts, release the lever (back to the detent).
Ride off immediately, using moderate throttle.
After no more than 1/4 mile, return the lever to off, and ride as you choose.

This allows the gear box, and final drive, to warm up at the same time as the engine.
From the BMW Riders manual:
To prevent the air-cooled engine from overheating and further damage, even short warming up periods at a standstill must be avoided.
And yes, BMW prints that in bold type.
