crackling noise

I have a 2004 r1150rt and it has started making a crackling or frying bacon noise when cranking it open around 4000rpm. Can anybody tell me what that may be?

I forgot another question, is there any other backrest besides "Backup" for my RT?

I don't know about the backrests but I am wondering about your noise when cracking it open. Do you think you could possibly be hearing pre-ignition? Regular grade gasoline is mor elikely to do this than premium (I don't know which you are using) but pre-ignition can sound like a bunch of little teensy tiny explosions - perhaps that is the frying bacon sound you are getting. If you're running premium already - try getting it from somewhere else and see if the problem persists. If it continues - maybe a motronic reset would help?

It may be what is referred to as "Pinging." My scooter made a similar noise when I cracked on the gas. It didn't have that typical automotive "ping." It kind of sounded like scrambling metal (not sure if that's a good description, but It didn't sound good)...I thought it was serious.

At any rate, I dumped a lil seafoam in the tank, per instructions, and some high test fuel. It cleared up the noise. Anytime that noise returns, I repeat the remedy....usually once per Summer.

The warmer the air temp, the more likely you are to experience pre-ignition.

Unless it's pretty cool out, I add an ounce of 104 Octane boost per tankful and always use
91 (can't get 93 around here) irregardless.

It is my understanding that octane (more or less) does not lead to pre0ignition or pinging. Supposedly there are additives in premium gas which inhibit pre-ignition. I somehow think it makes the fuel slightly less volatile.
