Photos From Harriman Bash

Post by Boxer »

This one comes to you from Kristi. She sent me this pic to post for her (along with some others I will need a bit more time to process) of the group photo last night just before darkness and looming clouds gathered. I will get the others done soon, as well as my own in the form of a slideshow, in a few days.

Here are a couple more from Kristi of the assembly last night where we gave out the door prizes. These shirts were donated by Hermy's BMW and were brought to the bash by Marty2.

Thanks to all for a really nice time. Sorry we couldn't stay for the finale. But this will not be my last, fa'sure.

Arnie and I made it to Middlesboro, Ky yesterday after doing 330 to 116. We saw some beemers going the other way. Anyone slip on that slick mud on the 330 side of 116?

That was pretty nasty stuff.

Today we went from Middlesboro to Lexington in rain about half the time, but were on two fabulous roads, 421 and 89. And one a little less fabulous, but still very nice, 119, The Kingdom Come Parkway.

Tomorrow the Bluegrass Trail, then covered bridges.

Hope everyone makes it home safely, and Chibbert, remember to wave after you pretend they are just not there and they "react."

And Daryl and Gab...although we saw no dogs under porches (or Porsches) a stray invaded my room last night and would not leave until Arnie and I carried out the piece of furniture where he took refuge from the thnuder and lightening, and dumped him out.

That Kentucky is something!

hope to see you guys and girls again soon.

Just checking in. I've been stopped since 2:00 this afternoon, but did not have wifi until about 20 minutes ago. I think the storms had something to do with that!

Last night when I looked at the weather radar, I saw just a slice of a clearing for this morning as my only way of leaving Harriman without encountering the coming storms. I calculated that I could probably make it to Gadsden, AL in dry weather if I left by 7:30 and was in a motel by 1:00 or 2:00 this afternoon. I knew it would be a short distance, but it still gets me closer to Texas, and also would allow me to explore a little of DeSoto State Park and Falls if I timed things right. So it worked out just that way. I always allow time for detours because I have travel ADD which causes me to stray and wander when I see something that interests me.

I stopped around Dayton and filmed some workers in the fields picking strawberries. At least I think those are strawberries. They were bent over for a long time, and then as soon as their basket was full, they would RUN to the truck waiting at the end of the row, unload, and get another basket, and RUN back to the fields. There was just something about this scene that intrigued me.

Image

I saw signs for DeSoto State Park and the Falls, and so I took a detour after Fort Payne, Alabama. It was more than I expected and I'm really glad that I took the detour even though I knew the small window of clearing in the skies was closing fast. While at the park and the falls though, it was sunny and people were even going out on the lake near the falls to fish. I did wish I had more time to explore the river. Next time.

Anyway, when I finally stopped in Gadsden or Attalla (not sure which town it is) about 1:30 - I realized I made it just within minutes of a deluge! An iPhone photo from the motel parking lot when I pulled up. This was surrounding me.

Image

This is the Best Western in Gadsden/Attalla, Alabama. They were so kind to me when I rolled up. I was too early for check in, but they promised me they would get right to cleaning a room for me. Not only that, but Marla, the young lady working the desk even made a batch of homemade cookies while I waited. She usually makes them anyway, but because she and I were having a nice conversation about her Kawasaki Ninja which she owns but has never ridden (it's in her name, but her boyfriend has it - - - - geeez, I see trouble brewing for kid), she said she would go ahead and make them now and give me a call when they were ready. Talk about service! But it gets better. They suggested I pull my bike up right to the front doors aside a column so it would be watched and protected as much as possible from the blowing winds and rain.

Image

I'm really impressed with this motel. I got a great rate too. $55.00 And look at the room. Overhead lights plus a ceiling fan, and a larger than normal sized room for that price. I don't know if the roads around here meet the criteria for a Bash, but I think this motel does. There are restaurants (several) just as close as the Ruby Tuesday was in Harriman. So - if the Bash ever moves further south, this isn't a bad place to consider. There is a big breakfast area also plus gathering area with big screen TV in the lobby as well. Just sayin'. Someone else will have to check out the roads though..... I need to head east tomorrow a.m.

I don't have editing software on this computer and the file sizes from the camera are about 25MB per photo, so it takes forever to get some ready to post. When I get home, I'll post some more, but here are a couple more from the Bash that I did get done before falling asleep today after checking in. Hopefully someone else has some photos of the roads or at least from the roads during the Bash. I don't because my point and shoot ran out of charge on the battery and I didn't have the charger with me. Here are some of the members who attended.

That's Dr. Strangelove at the head of the table, with Chibbert to his right and then Boxer. On his left are DarylStamp and his wonderful wife, Gabrielle

And - for those who asked: Here is my plight at the Western Kentucky State Mental Hospital:

I was looking for a place to make some phone calls Thursday morning once businesses were open for my call. I kept looking for a 'safe' place in Hopkinsville, KY but was running out of options on the east side of town until I saw a Hospital sign. There was no gate stopping me from getting in. Only a sign at a booth that said visitors must register, but it was blocked by a couple of people in cars talking across the booth entrance to each other and one of them shouted at me, "Go on in honey, We'll be a while". I still assumed this was just a regular hospital. I did get suspicious however once I rounded the back side of the building and started seeing the people there. Still I looked for "visitor" parking. Found a spot. Made my calls. And then was ready to leave. But when I got to the ONLY exit - I was locked in. I was on a steep downhill sloping narrow drive with ditches on both sides. The weight of the bike loaded down was too much for me to back it up the steep slope. The drive was too narrow for me to try to turn around without tipping on that incline. So I called to some people walking out of a building across a grassy median opposite of the hospital. I asked if they could help me. They would not reply. So I started walking to them and they started to hurry away. I guess saying "I'm stuck here and I can't get out" was not the right thing to say if you are trying to get out of a Mental Hospital parking area. But I still didn't know that was where I was. Finally, I said, "I'm traveling from Texas and I need to get back on the road, but the gate won't open. Can you just tell me where I am so I can call the operator and ask for security to come open it for me?" That's when I found out where I was. So I called and had to go through the whole story for the operator who just didn't know what to do for me. I suggested maybe a security guard or grounds keeper could come open the gate. She said she would do what she could. I waited another 10 minutes and finally a couple of workers came up. I explained to them my situation and they were able to pull their compact car up close to my bike to get the gate open so that we could both leave. As I was waving goodbye to them, I saw security coming. I didn't stop. Here are a couple of photos that show the sign that says it won't let motorcycles out, and the incline I was on.

It was great to see everyone. Thanks for welcoming me to my first Eastern Bash. It really was superb riding with all of you. And it great to make new friends and catch up with those I met before. I rode with Marty, Buckster, Dr. Strangelove, and Arnie part of the day on Friday and then we picked up OU812, Cousin Dadoo, and Ves on the ride home. Saturday I ran some errands, got my bike ready for the trip home and then went exploring by myself some roads as well as the Obed Wild And Scenic River State Park near Wartburg, TN. It was wild and scenic. :)

I'll be traveling across Alabama tomorrow and into Mississippi where I plan to jump on the Trace. Probably around Tupelo. I'll ride it south until I'm bored or it's time to quit for the day and hopefully find a place to camp again. Hoping to make it home by Wednesday now. So far, I've logged 1790 miles on this trip and will have traveled through 11 states by the time I get home.

Looking forward to seeing more of the country and making new friends at other Bashes.
Until then - -

Kristi

Your pictures and narrative are always so welcome and excellent testament to what riding and good friendships are all about.

Likewise, Boxer with his picture collage and the appropiately added music also depics he basic nature of the Bash attendees.

Last but not least the diatribe of Doc Love on the Cherohala, BTW, I love Tn 360, was funny and stimulating for those that couldn't make it.

Thanks, for the memories.

Diatribe! Diatribe! We don't need no stinking Diatribes.

Just calling them as I see them and I never know when I go ever the edge, but I like the view from there.

So, Arnie and I are in Lexington, Ky now and NO Rain Today!!!

This is beautiful country around here and I think Ky should be considered also for a bash. But it is so rural I don;t know if there is a location that would have the necessary accommodations, but the roads are ready.
We did the Blue Grass Trail today, an easy day on slow paced rural roads through horse farms. For sheer beauty of riding this area should be on anyone's short list.
Gonna seek out covered bridges tomorrow, have a garmin route ready. Will wind up in Huntington WV tomorrow night then we start home on fabled WV 10 and 16 and Va 16.

Will check in as I can. Since everyone seems to have mileage and mpg envy, we are at 1500 miles out from New Orleans and I am probably averaging about 47-48 mpg. I have used almost a pint of oil. And all of my scotch is gone.

Damn.

John

PS...Kristi, that's a pretty sinister picture of me :D

As usual, a great time visiting and riding! Not as many pictures as usual due to camera issues but you'll get the idea.
