95 r1100rs tranny issue

Hi, Last month I got this 95 r1100rs from a dealer in NY. the bike had 29.6k on the clock and has about 34k now....and after having it for 2 weeks took off on a ride to MOA and then over to Memphis, down the delta and then towards home. after the first day or so began having an issue where on acceleration in 1st the shifter would pop into 2nd and then drop into neutral...it is an inconsistant problem but annoying because if I am trying to get started quickly the bike stopping its acceleration almost got me rear ended several times.

the bike came with a 30 day guarantee. I did notify the dealer that it was slipping out of gear. they checked the bike over and said the clutch needed adjusted at both ends...they did it and did some other adjustments...said the bike seemed normal and go ride. after a week out on the road the clutch is again out of adjustment.

I stopped in Knoxville and found a certified BMW mec who is an independant...not connected to the dealership...willing to work on Monday....a very nice older gent who appears to know very well what he is doing....he also managed to get the bike to stop surging. his considered opinion is that the shift fork(?) is bent and that the square cut gears have worn off their corners in 1st and 2nd and will probably need replacement. he adjusted the clutch and it helped quite a bit but it did not take the problem away.

Have any of you had issues like this? for a while I was thinking that synthetic tranny fluid may help but that seems a bit silly if the gears are truly worn.

we are still on the road and will not be back until the end of the week. I intend to approach the dealer when I get back.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike,

what the dealer told you is nonsense. This is the common oilhead gearbox problem which was fixed from model year 1998 onwards. Have a look at this article (http://www.largiader.com/tech/oiltrans/) and an idea about the amount you'll have to shell out to get the problem fixed.

on an almost related topic....today after stopping for gas in Carlisle Pa while attempting to enter 81 n the clutch cable popped leaving us stranded about 1/2 mile onto 81n. I called my NY dealer to ask if they knew of anyone here eand was referred to a dealer in Wilkes Barre who was not very interested in helping.....they did know the name of a dealer in Hamburg, but not the number or even where Hamburg is..... that was Hermes and they were very helpful telling me that there was another dealer about 10 miles away. Velocity Cycles. I finally got thru to them at about 6 pm. they were happy to send a truck and trailer to pick us up and try to locate a clutch cable....they stayed until 7:30 trying to locate one and then gave us a ride to a local motel where we are now. these guys deserve kudos for customer service and general goodness.

a couple of friends with 1100/RS/R/GS were on tour to Austria last year and 3 of them had the clutch cable problem. Obviously shortly before the weekend or during the weekend and got stranded ... That's why I always carry a used spare cable (as well as my old alternator belt) with me when on tour.
