I'm a little confused about BMW luggage, racks and mounting hardware. This rack came installed on my used R1200R. Can it be used to mount the BMW saddlebags or do I need something different? I tried looking it up on the BMW website but all I could find was a 1150 luggage rack.
Psssttt... Kid... I'll give'ya $50 and a set of the standard luggage mounts for it..
Just kidding - sorta. Well - actually not.
It's the standard BMW luggage rack for the R12R - and yes - you can mount BMW bags with it. The two lumps that will stick up out of the rails when mounted on the bike are what the bags go on (and one mount down by the pillion footpeg mount.)

So there is a set of luggage mounts that do the bags only and then a different set (mine) that mounts the bags and a place for a topcase? And if I order the BMW saddlebags do they come with the lower mount?
I'm discussing with another member the idea of me trading my rack and some money for a set of Givi bags w/mounts.
Actually what I'd like are very much smaller than the BMW hard bags, especially if I could find something at a lower price than the BMW stuff. I don't think the Givis are really any smaller but I haven't actually seen them. I see something called Sport Cases on the BMW website but they don't mention a fitment for the R12000R.

Yes, there are two sets of mounts: one set has the rack/topcase mount (what you have), the other set is for the cases only. The cases and mounts are sold separately. And no, unfortunately, there is no sport case option for the R12R. I have seen the Givis and while they look good and appear well made, they are about the same size as the BMW cases and the mounts are fugly. If you are going to run the cases all the time I guess that doesn't matter, though.
You have the good rack with the plate for a top case. Most have the other set that will only support the side cases. IMO they all should be like yours as the cost is rediculous for the side case only set up and that little top rack is so handy. Not to jinx the swop, but double check before you get rid of them as they're pricey to replace.
I also have the full rack with the topcase plate. I thought of getting the side rails only due to looks. I still think the full rack somewhat destroys the sleek rear of the bike, but boy, is it handy. I'll keep it on.
that is really the only disappointment with this bike so far for me - i loved using the topcase on my F650. the mount for the topcase on the r12r does destroy the lines in my opinion and i didn't want the mount. so no topcase for me. serves me right for being so vain i suppose.
