Ooh, i love my new bike! + some questions...

Post by Kalle »

Hello!

Ive been reading this forum for months waiting for my new bike. Finally it arrived here, my brand new alpine white RR '09. (Im from Norway, and the Germans send us new bikes last in the world, i think, as there is still snow everywhere...) I tested one last summer, ordered it in august and got it on thursday... Well, better late than never, I guess.

Anyways - i have som slight problems. My tire pressure monitors dont work. I was so excited i simply didn't check why i didnt get any milage counter or tire pressure monitoring before i blasted off. I know it marks me down as a true scatterbrain, but when you've been waiting for something this good for sooo long, you don't bother with details as yellow triangles on your dashboard *cough* *cough*. Besides the ride is so sweet i dont really care. Just grin through the sleet and fog (it's 2degcel here now) Anyways, my question is: the manual states there might be wrong tires or batteries missing in my tires. Is there some way of checking what is what, or if there is something technically wrong? I will take it back to the dealer, but he is 1,5 hours drive away so i would like to know if there is something simple to do like changing some batteries?

I have another question too. I have ASC. Is there some way of knowing if it is trully working? When i stand still on a gravel path in first, and blast off, the wheel spins like any other bike ive ever ridden. Does it only kick in when im riding above a certain speed? I know the ABS works, ive tested those hard... (Fun...)

Thanks for your time, if you hand me some tips ;)

cheers

Kalle.

Hi Kalle,

Glad to hear you love the new bike. It’s hard not to!

I’m probably being way too simplistic in my answers and you’re not nearly the scatterbrain you suggest. This is some basic stuff that you’ve no doubt already considered…

The TPC system will not give you a reading from start-up and you have to ride for a few minutes (at least 30 km/h) to get anything on the monitor. If you’re doing that and it’s still not working, then it sounds like a fault for the dealer.

Your wheels shouldn’t be spinning with ASC activated. My personal system test is to give it a fistful in first gear (on tarmac) and as the front wheel starts to leave the ground, the engine will cough and sputter. ASC is working! Other than a technical fault, ASC will not function at start-up until you have reached about 5 km/h and it completes self-diagnosis (and the flashing ASC warning light will go out). Another, albeit unlikely cause, is that it’s been turned off manually, in which case the ASC warning light will stay continuously lit (as it should with a fault). ASC can also automatically shut down under extreme conditions - maybe like a big spin in the gravel on take-off!

It’s a bummer being so far from the dealer, but it's a brand new bike, and you're probably better off taking it back for them to look at. If you can live with the faults for the moment, you can always wait until your first service.

Congrats on the new bike! +1 on MrChicken's advice. I would just do my normal pre ride checks of oil, air pressure, etc. and live with it until the initial service. A call to your shop would let them know of the problem on newly delivered motorcycle as well as any suggestions they may offer about the faults.

I'm glad this hasn't detracted from your fun.

Cheers!

Thank you all for the answers!

The TPC never stops showing 4 lines where the pressure should be. Today, i was doing around 30kph and pushed the throttle a little to test the ASC and the rear tire went out some, so im guessing it is not working either. Still, cant stop grinning. It just wants to do turns, break and accellerate.

My friend is a racing bike lover. He has a pumped-up Yamaha R1, and tested my RR. After the test ride, he started mumbling about wanting to have two bikes, and that my bike just made him believe he could do anything, the handling was much better than his, much greater range on the gears and so on... Coming from someone who've never said anything other about beemers than "i dont like boxers - they stick out", its a nice testament... Poor pup, hehehe...

thanks again,

I could swear I remember reading in the manual (don't have it with me to check) that the ASC light will flash for three seconds if it is ever activated during riding.

The ASC warning light does flash when ASC is activated, but you've usually got other stuff on your mind when it does!!!
