Garmin 276C

I am new to MC GPS and have recently purchased a 276C. A friend has kindly made a trip map for me. Unfortunately I am unable to use it as it is not recognised by MapSource. The map was provided as "gmapsupp.img". I was advised that I had to copy this to my Garmin SD card. As the SD card is not generic I have no way to do this. Can anyone help resolve this please.
