Looking for advice from some of you BMW experts out there.........
Purchased my 2000 R1100R with 22,000 miles a few weeks ago. It ran great for about 400 miles, and this afternoon would not start. I'm guessing it is the fuel pump, as I'm not hearing it come on as I turn the key on. Also, I pulled a plug, and it appears to be dry, right after having turned the engine over with the starter for about 5 seconds.
Does anybody else have any other ideas? If it is the fuel pump, how difficult is it to change yourself?
This is my first BMW, so any advice from all of you experienced BMW owners would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: 2000 R1100R Will Not Start
My first advise when fault finding is never make assumptions... but deductions.
Its unusual for fuel pumps to just go cold turkey, off.
The fuel hose may have spilt internally , the sidestand switch may be stuck shut=WD40
the Hall effect sensor may be gone, all assumptions
By deducing firstly is there spark available? If yes i would put some petrol inside the cylinder
and see if it splutters or not,

"i would put some petrol inside the cylinder and see if it splutters or not..."
... and if petrol is unavailable in your area, try gasoline.
See if you inadvertently turned the emergency kill switch to the off position. If so, you would not be the first one by a long shot. One of the sillier things taught in MSF courses is to routinely use that emergency switch to turn off the engine. But sometimes you can bump it accidentally, like when hanging your helmet on the right grip.
Take a look at your fuse box. Maybe the fuse for the fuel pump is blown. I am new to the R1100R and don't have a user manual, so I don't know which one it is. Perhaps someone else here can tell you.

Fuse # 6 counting from the Left Hand side. 15 amps.
# 9 and # 10 are spare 15 amp fuses.

Keep the ideas coming. I've had to go out of town on business until Saturday, and will not start trouble shooting until Sunday morning. The kill switch is not the problem, and the fuse has been checked, and appears good.
Thanks again for the help.

Re: 2000 R1100R Will Not Start
Here is the latest update....Returned from my out of town trip this evening, and decided to do a little more trouble shooting.
1. When the key is turned on, the fuel pump does not run.
2. Double checked the fuse, and it is fine.
3. Switched the horn relay with the fuel pump relay, and still nothing.
4. Checked the voltage at the multi-pin electrical connector, below the tank on the right side, and have a good 12 volts.
At this point I feel fairly certain the fuel pump is the problem. I can't check the voltage at the pump itself until I remove it from the tank, but the wiring from the multi-pin electrical connector to the pump appears to be in excellent condition. (No kinks, nothing frayed, and really looks like new)
I'm heading out of the country for 2.5 weeks on Monday morning, and will order one of the high dollar fuel pumps, before I go, and put it in when I return. Might as well do the fuel filter at the same time. If I'm missing something in my logic here, please speak up now.
Thanks again for you input.

Before i bought a fuel pump & filter for around $400 i would ascertain
if the side stand switch is actuating with a multimeter.
