New R-1150-R Windscreen

Post by dallara »

Okay,

Yesterday I got to give the "new" BMW factory windscreen a real work-out, riding 580+ miles in a day on both interstates and in the twisties, so here's a short review...

For those of you unfamiliar with this "new" windscreen, it was shown at Intermot last year, and was posted about on the "old" http://www.r1150r.net board (ezboard). Here's a link to a picture:

http://www.bobsbmw.com/parts_accessorie ... ields.html

(scroll about 3/4's down the page, and look for "High Windshield 380mm for R1150R")

How's it work?

Well, as with most things, it has both it's good points and not-so-good points...

1.) Appearance - I think it actually looks great mounted. Evokes memories of 1950's road racers to me, and looks smaller on the bike than you think it will when you first take it out of the box. Very similar to the Bikescreens NZ screen that mounts on the BMW flyscreen mounts, but not raked quite so far back. You will have to decide for yourself if you like the looks of the bracing uprights or not. I do.

2.) Mounting - A royal pain. Makes mounting the flyscreen easy by comparison. You have to disasemble about half the front end of the motorcycle to mount it properly. However, the trade-off for this is the shield is wonderfully rigid in use, and does not move in any way no matter what the sidewind or speed. Bracket did line up perfectly, just like most BMW-made accessories. Took me about an hour to pull my flyscreen and mount this one, working carefully and methodically. One great thing is it does *NOT* use the usual BMW expanding rubber grommets to mount the shield. No sir... Hole in the shield take captured *BIG* rubber grommets, internally threaded posts welded to the bracketry come through these grommets, and large dished washers go over the grommets on the outside and big screws thread in on top holding it all together. No more windscreen popping out of the mounts!

3.) Shield quality - Typical BMW, only better. Optically perfect, with no distortion whatsoever, anywhere. The best way to describe the shape is as though they cut a section out of a sphere, No reverse flips, no contours, nothing... Just a smooth, rounded bubble. Shield is thicker than any BMW shield I have ever seen, and is stiff, stiff, stiff. Ultra-rigid. Looking through it is like looking through clear, mountain air...

4.) Performance - This will depend a lot on how tall you are, how high a seat you have, what bar arrangement, etc. I am 5'8" tall, but rather long torso'ed and short legged. I have a Sargent saddle, and I use "Ricky" bars. You most definitely look "over" this shield... Way over. It is actually raked back quite a bit when mounted - much more so than how it appears in pictures - though not as far back as the Bikescreens shield. For me it is about 10-15mm too short, or it is raked back just a bit too far. The windblast coming off the shield hits me right at about face shield level, and I really wanted to to try and get it to toss the bugs over my head instead of splatting right on my shield. At this it does a better job than any shield I have tried, but it's not quite "there' yet... However, the airflow off of it is wonderfully smooth and quiet... No excessive noise, no buffeting. Just smooth flowing air. Your helmet remains completely where you want it, with no bouncing or buffeting around, and however loud your helmet was before is how loud it will be with this shield. For this alone it is worth the price. I have never ridden behind a quieter or smoother shield on a "naked" type bike, period. I cannot stress this enough...

Now, what would I change? Like I said, I wish it was just 10 or 15 - maybe 20 - mm taller, but I think I can achieve the same thing by gently bending the support/mounting bracketry to make the shield just a bit more upright. I only hope this won't spoil the good looks of the shield, nor muck up the airflow... In order to avoid this kind of thing I am going to go very slowly with the "bending" adjustments.

All in all, I am very happy with it, and perhaps the best compliment I can give it is that all of my regular riding buddies who ride with me quite often didn't even notice I had swapped to it from the flyscreen... When I mentioned later in the day I was pleased with the my new windscreen they all then said things along the lines of "Wow, I hadn't even noticed you didn't have the little screen on..."

So, for the "new" BMW Roadster screen, I give a solid 9.0... :smt023

Of course, YMMV...

Cheers!

You could try a laminar lip to get the extra height. I have one on my sport screen and I am liking it a lot.

Here's a coupla pics:

Dallara, Thanks for the report.

Does this part no. 71 60 7 686 761 cover the screen and mountt?

After-market Bars?

Post by kjax909 »

Dallara, When you say you are using "ricky" bars, can you tell me more? I'm looking for a replacement for the stock bars. I've tried everything (barbacks, touring shield, laminar lip, crampbuster, etc.) but the angle of the bars seem to create really bad neck/shoulder pain in any ride over a couple of hundred miles (never had this problem on my previous bike). Thanks.

Dallara,
Do you have any pics of it on your bike. I have never been able to see a pic of this screen actually on the bike to get a comparison to the other shields.

How tall?

Post by jamming60 »

Dal, throw a tape measure on it it. How tall is it from the top of the headlight to the top of the screen? I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance
Roger.
I know it says 380MM and all, but where is it meaured form.

Ditto..........Have never seen this fitted to our bike which is the only way to get a good idea of how it looks.
As it stands, it looks a bit dowdy in the pic compared to the others available.
Will reserve judgement though until seeing it on a bike, which is the only way to really tell.

Dallara,
Thanks for the review. When I look at the picture on Bob's BMW site it appears that the mounting bracket has one piece coming off of the center of the bottom section. If so, where does this piece attach? Then again it might be the way I perceive the picture, a optical illusion or something (or as I like to call 'em, an obstacle delusion).

Looks like two mounting points...

one bellow...normal speedster/fly screen mounting points

and another above off the handle bar clamps...shown here.

I'm not sure I like that look from above

Various question replies...

Post by dallara »

I'll try to answer all the various questions and comments in a single reply...

Let's start with Queenpdog...

The Laminar Lip is a good idea, and I had actually already thought of them, but, given that Laminar doesn't really give any dimensions/specs/etc. on their various shields I haven't been able to determine which of what they make now might work on this screen. I plan to call them and ask them if they can help. What would make that great is that I could simply tack the "Lip" on for trips and leave the shield bare the rest of the time... It's going to stay on. It looks that good.

For BMWkidd...

No, that single part number does *NOT* cover the screen and the mount. I saw the screen at Bob's and e-mailed them. They didn't know if it included the mount or not, as they had never seen one... :smt017

I checked with Chicago BMW (remember, my closest BMW dealer is 200 miles away in Austin), and they informed me that you needed these two numbers:

71 60 7 686 761 Windshield, High $156 from Chicago BMW

71 60 7 685 197 Mounting Kit, Windshield High $100 from Chcago BMW

The retail for just the windshield (no mount kit) is $195, and that's what Bob's was selling them for. I checked back with Bob's later, and they said I was probably right, but since they had still not seen one they weren't sure.

So I got the screen and mount from Chicago...

For kjax909...

"Ricky" Bars are made by Ricardo Kuhn, and replace the bar clamps and the bars on your Roadster. The bars he uses are either Renthal "Fat Bars" (what I have) or ProTaper aluminum handlebars. They are not cheap, but Ricardo's training and education is in ergonomics, and he will not sell you a set without extensive consultation about your measurements (height, weight, length of arms, etc.), riding style, seating position, accessories (like what siz or brand saddle you have), etc. After filling out a form and sending it to him, and a few phone calls, he cuts a set of bars to fit you and sends 'em out. Nothing I have done to my Roadster, save for the Sargent seats, has done more to make my R1150R comfortable for long, long rides. He completely eliminated the hand numbnes I was experiencing after hours in the saddle... It's gone.

Check 'em out at:

http://www.motomacondo.com/protaper_roadster.html

For Biff's R...

Don't have any pictures of it yet, but I will try to get some this evening when I get home if there is still plenty of light. If I can't get the pics this week it will have to wait until next week, as I have to fly out this weekend.

For Jamming60...

It measures 15 and 1/8 inches from the cutout for the headlight to the top of the screen (380mm is 14.96 inches, BTW), and the cutout sits about a 3/4 of an inch above the headlight. The screen is raked back quite a bit, though, and the top edge sits 11 and 1/2 inches directly above the ignition switch (with no key in the switch).

For Marko...

It is anything but "dowdy"... To me it looks terrific - better than any other screen I have seen on a Roadster (of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder... YMMV). There is something very "nostalgic" about it that somehow goes with the Roadster... Like I said, sort of like a 1950's road racer with the bracing and all. For how smooth and quiet the airflow is, I actually wouldn't care if it looked like s**t... :smt081

It flat works, but I will try to get pics soon...

For ronspice...

Yes, it has a center mount. That mount goes to the center mounting bolt for the instrument mounting bracket. It's one of the reasons the screen is a pain to mount. You have to disassemble most of the front of the bike... i.e. remove the headlight, take all the instrument cluster and headlight mounting bolts out or loosen some, etc. However, it is this mount that is partially responsible for the screen and bracket being so rigid and flex-free.

For DJ Downunder...

Nope, DJ, that's not it... In fact, if you look at the picture you posted carefully you will see that is another screen entirely, as it uses a similar set-up as the flyscreen to mount the shield.

No, on this one the outer arms of the bracket go to exactly the same place as the flyscreen's mounts, and then there is the single post mounting in the center. Nothing like the picture you posted. If that was how it mounted I couldn't have done it, as my "Ricky" bars use completely different clamps and that would have never worked.

Hope this covers everybody!

Cheers!

Pictures of Windscreen

Post by dallara »

Had to go by the house at lunch time, so I thought I would snap a few pics of the new windscreen for those of you who asked...

Check out my gallery on smugmug at:

http://r1150r.smugmug.com/gallery/580458

Sorry about the couple that are fogged. I brought the camera out of the A/C in the house and it took it a while to settle down to temp...

Hope these help!

i must say that it 'looks' to be one of the better, if not best, aesthetically matched shields to our bike.

BUT, being 5'11", it seems my whole head would be above the screen. As long as it doesn't get knocked around, this could be good.

Airflow...

Post by dallara »

That's the thing I like about it the most, Scotty...

The airflow is smmoth, smooth, smooth... I get no buffeting with this screen at all, whereas I even got helmet buffeting with my flyscreen (very little, but more than with this screen).

On the height note... I am short, at 5'8", but I am rather long torso-ed, having only a 29-30" inseam. I look *WELL* over this new screen, and the airflow off of it, as I mentioned, hits right about the height of my face shield when riding...

Now, one would think that if the windblast off a shield hit you right in the face shield, it would not be good, but again, the airflow is so smooth and controlled it is not an issue.

I just had a sudden idea how to perhaps tilt the screen a bit more upright, without bending the mounts... I'm about to head home, and maybe I can try it tonight...

Cheers!

Dallara, Nice pics. That is a good looking screen.....

BUT,

how is it mounted? Are there only 2 bolts that hook it on like the fly(speedster) screen? Or is something hidden?

Inquiring minds want to know. :?:

That does look great on the bike. Thanks for taking the pix for us.

Like I said, you do have to see it in context on the bike before making a final assessment.
I like it.
In fact, i think i like it the most out of all the 1150R screens, although
the BMW touring screen is also a great looking screen.
Pity we can't get one over here!

The brackets look neat as well.
.......I am going back to take another look at the pi

Is this screen smaller/shorter than the BMW touring screen? It costs about $260 with mounting hardware compared to $180 for the touring screen, yet it looks to be smaller.

Why is that, and why would you get this versus another windscreen? I am not criticizing the choice -- just trying to understand what niche this is filling.

More Answers...

Post by dallara »

I'll try to answer some of the additional questions...

For Biff's R...

Regarding the mounting, as I mentioned in a previous post on this thread:
No, on this one the outer arms of the bracket go to exactly the same place as the flyscreen's mounts, and then there is the single post mounting in the center. Nothing like the picture you posted. If that was how it mounted I couldn't have done it, as my "Ricky" bars use completely different clamps and that would have never worked.
If you look closely at these pics:

http://r1150r.smugmug.com/gallery/58045 ... 5752/Large

http://r1150r.smugmug.com/gallery/58045 ... 6696/Large

http://r1150r.smugmug.com/gallery/58045 ... 6320/Large

You will see that the two outer arms that wrap around the instruments do mount to exactly the same points as the flyscreen, however, you will also see a center mounting arm just behind where I have applied the BMW emblem. This is a channel shaped piece, with some cute holes drilled in it, that goes under the instrument cluster and has a long boss (and the kit comes with a long bolt to go through it to replace the stock bolt) that mounts to the big center mounting bolt of the instrument mounting bracket. I really don't know how to explain better than that.

The shield bracket ends up having a three-point to the motorcycle, which is quite rigid, rather than the two-point mounting of the flyscreen.

For Marko...

Is the screen really not offered by BMW over in Australia? Here are the part numbers again if you want to check with your dealer.

71 60 7 686 761 - Windshield, High

71 60 7 685 197 - Mounting Kit, Windshield High

If one of your local dealers can't get it for you I'm sure Chicago BMW (where I got mine) or another USA dealer (San Jose, Sierra, etc.) would be happy to ship one over to you. I have no idea how bad the freight charges might be, however. The windshield comes well packed in one box, with the mounting bracket and hardware in another. Neither is very heavy, but both are good-sized, bulky boxes...

For rdsmith3...

There were multiple reasons I chose this screen over the "older" model touring screen... The biggest one was simple, however...

Personally, I think the old-style BMW Touring Screen is *F-UGLY*! :smt078

No offense to those of you who have 'em, but I just couldn't bring myself to strap one of those on my beautiful Roadster. Not a single curve or shape on the Touring Screen meshes with the lines of the Roadster, IMHO, while this one looks like it belongs on there, much like th Flyscreen does.

Another reason was reading on this board, and elsewhere, about the noise and buffeting from the Touring Screen. From what I gathered only a very small minority liked the airflow, noise, etc. of the Touring Screen. I also sat on an R-1150-R that had one mounted (didn't ride it, though, so I really don't know...) and just didn't like the shape in front of me, nor the distortion it produced. Take a look at this pic closely:

http://r1150r.smugmug.com/gallery/58045 ... 6784/Large

And you can see there is literally no distortion through this screen. I know you don't normally look "through" one of these screens, but sometimes you do have to glance down directly in front of you and I want that view as slear as possible. Also I find screen distortions distracting, period. Last but not least regarding the distortion... I have a video camera mount that I made that bolts to the fuel cap mounting bolts (those of you from the old board may remember it, but if you do not, and you would like some oictures of it, let me know and I will stick in my gallery) and mounts my Sony PC-1 vid cam. It has to look "through" the screen (as it did with the flyscreen, which has very little distortion, too, but more than this screen), and for decent video the screen has be as distortion-free as possible. From what I saw of the "old" Touring Screen, this would have been a video disaster.

So far, everyone who has seen the screen in person loves it, and thinks it just looks "right" on the bike. Even the pictures I took do not do this point justice. When you see it on the bike it seems to "match" the curves and shapes of the R, while very much having a 1950's road racing "fairing bubble" personality to it... It's hard to describe...

I hope that this covers all the questions so far, and in someway helps. If anybody has any more, fire away! :D

Cheers!

Dallara

Style is subjective, I suppose. This new screen is not bad looking. I have not seen it in person, of course. I also think the touring screen is not bad looking. They are both just OK in my opinion. I do not think one is exceedingly more objectionable than the other.

The only screen that looks good -- that enhances the looks of the bike rather than detracts from them -- is the fly screen. The fly screen looks even better than a naked bike, IMO.

Any other screen looks like an add-on, so there is always a balance of how much ugliness you can tolerate for the function you get. (I would not get the Aeroflow, but that is just me.)

There is no good way to really compare the functionality of these screens. We are all different heights; have different seats; have different helmets; sit differently; and so on. Plus, they are expensive and a pain in the neck to mount, so it is not practical for one person to compare different versions.

Enjoy your new wind screen.
