Rear brake pad retainer question

Post by Paul-from-VA »

I just changed the rear pads on my bike (6,000 miles) because the inside pad was pretty much toast. I removed the clip, pulled out the pads, replaced them then tried to insert the clip. I could not really see too well so I removed the caliper. The clip came out with the L shaped head facing right (viewed from rear) and the curved part of the clip to the rear. The factory CD seems to show it the same way. Problem is it looks wrong....the curved part of the clip catches on the caliper casting and holds the pad in closer to the caliper. I realize this might be difficult to understand...but if you have done it. Anyway, I put it back together the way it made sense to me looking at it, everything seems fine and the dragging I had previously noted seems to be less. My question, which way does your clip face and does anyone know a real reason I might be putting it back together incorrectly. I'm not sure if you can tell anything more than direction just looking at the caliper on the bike.

Mine faces over the caliper. I think that's done so nothing accidently catches it and pulls it out, which could be a bad thing since then the pin could vibrate out and the pads.. well - you get the idea.. wouldn't be a good thing.

EDIT: You can rotate the pin so the clip actually lays on the caliper without any force.. If you need it - remind me - and I'll try to take a photo. Might be a bit since I have something going on tonight, and tomorrow AM I leave on a 3 day bike trip.

Thanks Don, I think you have the same configuration as mine is now.
