BBAS screws cleaning

hi all,
i posted this question in another thread, but i think not many people saw it, since i got no replies.
so here it is: how do i clean the BBAS (big brass air/adjustement screws) ? namely, do i just unscrew them and clean them and that's it ?
i'm asking since i can easily imagine a mechanism that is ok as long as one just turns a screw, but things fall out once the screw is completely removed. i can imagine many things :) hence i would like to hear from someone who has experience with it, rather than assuming it will be fine and go on experimenting.

If your bike is idling just fine, don't mess with them unless you are concurrently doing a valve adjustment and a Throttle Body Synch (and new plugs if you are entirely anal like me!). You really need a manometer to get the idle/synch done properly and use the BBS's to their best advantage.

well, i want to clean the bbas since while doing the throttle body sync i noticed that simply turning the bbas (to check the difference between the two) and then getting them back in the same position seemed to help. i use twinmax to balance the two cylinders, but have problems with it. it's an old bike and i realise i will probably not be able to sync it perfectly. but, for the same reason, i think cleaning things could help.

OK!
The baseline setting is 2.0 turns out....just check your existing settings (screw in until GENTLY seated) then remove the BBS's, clean with carb cleaner and a fresh rag (watch out for the o'rings!). If your o rings disintegrate you will need to replace them before putting back, so I would get them first....just in case!
Then put the screws back until GENTLY seated then back them out the number of turns it took to seat them in the first time.....if your bike idles and runs smoothly, no problem. If it is lumpy on idle, just hook up your TwinMax and get the idle matched up and Voila!
