Tool needed

Hello, I want to take off the saddle bag mounts and change them for the combo rear rack and saddle bag mounts I just purchased. The heads of the screws bolts are those star looking things I have seen on most BMW bikes. Can I use a tool I may have already, or do I need a special tool for these bolts so I dont scred them up trying to use the wrong tool. What do I need? Any one have tips or tricks for changing these over to the rear rack, and removing the saddle bag mounts?

ALL the bolts/screws on the R1200R are "TORX" screws. Do not try using any tools you have if you don't have Torx drivers - you will screw the bolts up.

Various types of Torx drivers are available at reasonable prices from places like Sears, Harbor Freight.. I own several sets of 3/8" drive "torx-drivers" - and some folding Torx sets I carry on the bike. I also have various collections of multi-bit tools that have Torx drivers included in the tools.

The right tool is the only tool to use.

Thanks Don, you are ALWAYS the man. I will dig out my BMW toolkits, I still have the full one from my F650CS, and the one that came with the R1200R. Is it likely that one or both of those BMW toolkits that came with the bikes would include the correct torx wrench?

If you can't find one in your existing tool kits just go and buy one. You will need it for everything you do on this bike.

I bought a really nice folding TORX set from Snap-On for $16. Fits everything on the bike. I have a few of the larger ones for my driver.

I've had good luck finding the torx drivers I need at Autozone. Don't bother with going to NAPA. They almost never have the correct stuff.

Allan - you actually bought something from a Snap-On guy for less than $20. Better check that something is in the box.
