Battery question

I'm sure I know the answer to this question but I just want to be sure...

I'm going to pick up an Odyssey battery in the morning and from what I see on this site and others, the PC680 is the one I need. I notice that they also make a PC680MJ (metal jacket) version which I think is for Harleys due to the heat. So based on that, I would assume I just need the PC680.

Thanks for the help. My battery is 5 years old and I have a trip coming up in 3 weeks so I'd rather change it in my garage than in a parking lot somewhere. I've heard a lot of good things about this battery and for the extra $15, I can't pass it up!

The standard PC680 does not come with appropriate posts that match up with the battery cables on our R's. (at least when I bought one some years ago) But they offer as a small cost option the right adaptor for the same. You may want to inquire about that.

Uh-oh. I just received my PC680 and did not order any posts/terminal connectors. If I recall correctly, it basically came with two screws that I assume are supposed to be the terminal posts. Do I need to order something different? I've yet to see my battery (and have not had the pleasure of taking off the tank yet). A couple low battery episodes convinced me to get a new battery and the PC680 seems to be highly recommended. Also, how important are the QD's I've seen mentioned?

If you can find a little scrap copper you can make the post adaptors. That's what I did. Take a small piece and bend it in an "L" shape and drill holes. Keep the height above the battery to a minimum so as to not allow any chance of the positive post contacting the underside of the tank.

QD's---they are problematic to many. I have had them break on me while riding---dumped fuel on a hot engine----scary! Another time they simply came apart slightly and caused other problems. Much of the problem issues stem from them not being properly seated together when taken apart and put back together. It is very easy to damage the o-ring on the male end of the QD if not careful in putting the two halves together. I would recommend using a slight amount of silicone lubricant on the o-ring when you take them apart and re-attach. I got tired of dealing with them and simply put a short piece of brass tubing in their place and used fuel injection clamps on it. It's inexpensive and doesn't leak.

On my 1150RA, one quick disconnect broke while riding. The plastic "male" part is fragile and easily breaks off. I replaced mine with metal Omega's, but a reasonable option is to just eliminate them with new hose all the way from the tank to the fuel distributor pipes or use 5/16 brass or copper straight pipes in place of the QD's. At the very least, carry the pieces of pipe with 5/16 inch fuel injection rated hose clamps when you travel so you won't get stuck on the side of the road.

I just picked up my battery and they are including the kit with the right angle hardware now. Not a bad deal for $120.

If they are brass "L" brackets, you still will have to modify them for a decent fit. Also, The rubber hold down strap is too large for the Odyssey battery. The Odyssey is slightly smaller than the stock battery. It all fits with the right fiddling and appropriate amount of foul language. I modified the plastic Positive post insulator from the stock battery and used duct tape to hold it down so's not to get a short to the underside of the tank. I also had to remove the "fixed" bolt from the negative side cable and use a short bolt to make the connection. If I had to do over again I would have bought a sealed Yuasa that had a proper bolt in fit. YMMV
