Final drive question

Post by stevedore »

After returning from a 1700 mile trip I now have about 12k on the odometer. I felt a strange sensation while rolling to a stop or pulling into my driveway. It feels as if the rear wheel is driving the engine just as I come to a stop. Not really a noise but a slight grinding at the rear wheel. This occurs while coasting to a stop at low speed with the clutch disengaged. Anyone else felt this? I'd hate to find a trashed final drive. I'll change the fluids and see what comes out with the old oil.

Check the clearance on the brake rotor carefully, under load. When my final drive went (at 36000 miles,) the slight "grinding" noise was due to the rotor contacting the caliper housing. Left a scrape mark on the inside of the caliper. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. A buddy of mine said the same thing. I'll check the pin on the rear brake caliper and change the fluid before I totally panic.
