Advice wanted please

Post by joemac666 »

Hi Guys

Looks like a great forum. I had a K1100lt a few years ago and went over to the dark side with a ducati st4. I've now decided to go back to beemer and love the look of the r1150r. I took a test drive on an 02 one with 1100miles on it on saturday. Loved it but have one niggle......might be just me but when at idle and giving just a wee burst of rev the bike seems to "rock" about as if it is going to one side? I hope this makes sense but is this normal with these bikes? It would be great for some advice on this or on these bikes in general as I would love to make the deal tomorrow and pick the bike up on wednesday!

Thanks in advance.

Totally normal with the opposed twin motor. Don't be afraid! I came to the R1150R from two K100's and fell in love with all that is good with them. The looks being the big magnet. ;)

Wow----an 02 with only 1100 miles! Buy it---you won't regret it!

The "rock" you feel when you blip the throttle----completely normal. First thing I noticed on mine when I bought my first one in '03. Torque of the big flat twin.

You'll love it!!

btw----welcome!!

Go for it! 5 years ago I went to by a new 1150GS from my local dealer, saw a new night black 1150R fell in love with it, put down £1000 deposit and rode it away 1 week later. As others have said, it looks like a "Propper Bike" should

ANY bike with a longitudinal crank will do - I would imagine your K11LT did it too - but the extra mass would have hidden it.

My K100's and K12 do not. The four cylinder motors are quite different. :-k

Sorry, couldn't help but grin when I read this.

The first time I rode a bike with one of those "funny enjuns" it really disturbed me. Straddling this big bike scared me a little to begin with, let alone the shock of revving it and feeling that tug to the right. This happened to be a Guzzi, but they rock and roll off idle just like a boxer.

I don't think the longitudinal crank is the deal though- it's more to do with slinging around 500cc's of piston (or better) on opposite ends of the motor.

Now if only I could find that copy of L.J.K. Setright's History of the Motorcycle!

The tug you feel is the torque reaction created when the "motor" accelerates a heavy crankshaft, flywheel, pressure plate -and- in neutral if the clutch is not squeezed, add the clutch plate and transmission input shaft plus the intermediate shaft and half the gears in the transmission.

All those parts in a 4 cylinder BMW are smaller diameter and lighter or non-existent, in addition to those bikes being heavier and with the crankshafts much lower to the pivot point (the ground).

Picked up my 02 1150r yesterday! I went ahead and traded the duke and took the beamer home. Fantastic ride, smiled the whole way home...........

Looking forward to a dry weekend to run in the new back tyre and go for a proper spin. Thanks for the help guys and look forward to using the site more often.

Gratz! Good choice you made there.
A friend of mine traded his Harley D. in for a R1150R and he too claimed he couldn't stop smiling all the way home.

My guess is: The roadster makes people smile :)

But it must be quite a different ride compared to the Duc you had. Doesn't the R feel a bit tame? Or does the torque make this up? ( Im quite curious on that one)

Thanks, Tame.....its hard to fine the right words. Both bikes demand different riding styles I think. The ducati was as lumpy as hell around town but once on the open road it just had to go so it was only a matter of time before me and the license parted company :)

The 1150r is so smooth, great riding position around town its a joy to sit on and because of the torque its hard not to enjoy the craic the bike gives. Sure its not as fast as the ducati toe to toe but beats it hands down in every other dept imho, that said I still love Ducati bikes and no doubt get another one in the future. I will be driving from Belfast to Wales and then to london 2 up in June so it will be good to see how the 1150r performs during this but I have no doubt it will be grrrreeeeaaat! Cant wait!
