Me and My r850r

Post by Flatknuckles »

Hello everyone,

Just came across the site and I'm delighted to see an 850 friendly forum. I wish I'd found you before. Well a little about me before I pose a little question. The bike is blue, 1999 with abs full luggage etc. I've had her for 18 months and I'm reasonably happy with her. My only grip is that at 6'4" I'm a little cramped.

When i got the bike she had not been taken care of and I dealt with the surging issues. I've gone through two left fuel injectors (crud in tank) a hall sensor and a hell of a lot of mechanics bills!! She's now running well. It's my intention to service her myself in the future and indeed, I recently did everything but the balancing of the throttle bodies successfully.

Anyway, I've been searching here all morning and I was just wondering if anyone had any threads on removing the cat from mine. My exhaust has only two sections, the down pipes and the collector box/can. I can find loads of info on three piece cans but not the two piece. I'd really like a little more noise out of here but BMW don't know what pipe would be best.

Anyway, nice to meet you all :D

Hi and welcome

Hi

I received the following advice when I wanted to do a mod to my R1150R. Perhaps it will be of use to you. There are a number of posts regarding mods to exhausts and just today I came accross one under "mods" that shows a nice picture of the actual mod to the exhaust http://www.bmwomen.com.

Check out this post here http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=11621

Before removing the stock can give all the nuts and bolts a good over night soak of WD40 or some other penetrating oil, this will make removal easier and help you avoid broken bolts, stripped threads, skinned knuckles and having to put all your pocket money in the swear box.

When I removed my can I took the heat shield and reversed it onto the cat, you will probably have to play around with the position to get the clamp to do up tight. The tail pipe is just a cheapo chrome one from the local car shop and just clamps straight on. I then removed the cat code plug ( if fitted to your bike, it is the first colored plug on the left in the row in front of the fuses ) you will find the bike will run better without it, a little bit richer fuel air mix means less surging and smoother throttle response.

Dont forget to reset the Motronic after removing the cat code plug, to reset remove fuse 5, wait for 1 minute, replace fuse 5, turn the ignition on (but don't start engine), open throttle fully 3 or 4 times, switch off ignition then start the engine.

The bike will sound much better not to loud and should run better, you can now also fit a full size left hand pannier from an RT.

Hope this helps.

Hank. (Hanks id the guy who provided me with the info)

Johan

Excellent - welcome FK.

My 850 is closer to the 1150R, whilst yours is closer to the 1100R by the sound of things - the later ones were seemingly only exported out of Europe for a very short time.

Sorry to hear you've had initial troubles, and hopefully the mechanics bills & your purchase price have added up to 'market-rate money' in the end. I'm sure now you have it sorted it'll give you a lot of fun & reliable service.

No tips on the cramping, it must be tough at 6'4" (I'm 5'10" & suffer a little already) but there is a lot of good advice on this board common to many models. Maybe a custom Corbin or similar with some extra padding & highway pegs?

If you do a search on 'TB sync' there are lots of posts on gauges for balancing - I use a Carbtune very successfully, I believe they take export orders too if you get really stuck. If you can swap an exhaust & change your own oil, then a throttle sync isn't beyond you.

All the best, enjoy the bike.

G'day FK...I'm not surprised that you are a little cramped..I am also 6'4" but I ride the 1150 and I can rotate the bars a little forward and find that it helps heaps..and I also tend to ride with my toes more on the pegs..although it bends the knees a little more it seems to give me more leg room around the tank.

You should test ride an 1150 and maybe consider changing bikes one day..The 1150 has many improvements over the 850/1100..IMO.

Welcome aboard.

Thankyou for all for your salutations. I've got handlebar raisers. Their ok but at 80 euros i still need another set. Might lower the pegs. Riding her isn't a problem until I want some thing small and throw arroundable. I'm getting a 250 street legel traillie to work on myself for that but in the mean time I'm going to enjoy the luxury of using an r850r for a 3 mile daily commute. I recon that reduces the service time dramatically.

Anyone any ideas on making a collector box / baffle one piece louder??? That the correct name? It's the cheapo 1999 exhaust. Might be from a 1992 luxury model?? The 850 is a budget model. Perfect city / weekend / blast (if in tune  ) motorcycle. I like it!

Suggestions on my exhaust. I'll be checking the links you gave me now.

Sure, contribute!

Not a lot of R850R owners here, but I think I remember one...

Where are you? Aerostich will ship internationally, I think.

I might have to set up my own forum at this rate :P :D

only messing! I don't want to change the stock. It's very big and very well made. Any chance of a linky to the bmwomen link? I was fortunate enough to find this Image

I know it's a small bike but it's great in the city and then I can take it out for a weekend blast. Sensitive to anything but pure fuel. No bioethanal nonsense. I'd say a lot of bmw owners go to reputable mechanics with my yoke and end up with bmw 'cos their bike has been treated like an airhead rather than an oilhead.

Rant over :)
