Magnetic tank bag

Post by jbim »

I was checking out the R1200R today. I tapped on the tank and it seemed to be metal. I was surprised as I thought BMW was getting a way from metal. Apparently, you can use a magnetic tank bag with it. Is this correct? Thanks

You can - it is a steel tank AFAIK.. but I wouldn't. Magnets have a nasty habit of picking up and embedding things in the surrounding material - which results in nasty scratches in the paint. I prefer strap-on bags myself.. RKA Shiloh Road bags work very well on the Roadster..

I use a magnetic tank bag on my bike and it holds just fine, but like Don said there are magnets in there and they do pick up metal stuff. A close inspection is a good idea before throwing it on your tank. I also usually but a bandanna between the tank and the bag, doesn't seem to stop the magnets from doing their job.
It doesn't help that the paint on the new Beemers is so soft, BMW could that a lesson from Harley and shoot a coat of clear powder coat over the paint. That makes it a bixxh to repaint but it looks new a lot longer. (IMHO)

I have a magnetic tank bag and use stuff called wonderweb available off ebay to protect the tank from scratches. This works better than a cloth protector as it's "sticky" and prevents the bag from sliding about.

If the wonderweb looks like drawer liner (open-weave rubber matting) - just keep an eye on it. I used a product like this (from Rider Warehouse) and found it attacked the paint and pinstriping on my K75S..

Just a heads up on it.. I don't think getting it wet and leaving it is good for the paint.
