The Capitals of Crash

Post by JCsman »

In a recent thread a poster added a survey of cities and the relative level of road rage.

A blurb published by Men's Health mag just crossed my desk. It used NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, insurance company and Governor's Highway Safety Association data.

From that they "graded" 100 of the larger cities as to worst and best drivers from a+ to F.

NYC came in #3, with an A+
Columbia, SC came in dead last (100) with an F.

Others I thought might be of interest:
DesMoines, IA #1/A+
San Francisco, CA #5/A
Richmond, VA #11/A-
Durham, NC #35/B-
Austin, TX #59/C-
Atlanta #62/C-
Charleston, WV #68/D+
Washington, D.C. #73/D+
San Antonia, #75/D+
Montgomery, AL (where I ride) #78/D
Miami, #80/D
Phoenix, AZ #89/D-
Charlotte, NC, #93/F
Kansas City, MO (almost my home town) #95/F
Greensboro, NC, #98/F
- Bill #438, Lifetime
If I'm going to grow up, I'd better hurry.....oh well.

Of the ones cited, I have traveled to and extensively commuted in Richmond, NYC, and Atlanta. I'd say this survey is more accurate.

I'm in Summit, NJ just outside of NYC. I'm struck by how orderly people drive around here, even if its fast. They signal, don't cut people off, and don't pull stupid maneuvers or get into accidents like people do around DC.

The average Northern Virginia driver is a retarded neanderthal.

Des Moines, IA #1

hee hee hee. Don't ya know that Des Moines is the Insurance Capital of the US? The actuaries are just keeping their own rates low. I think it's a conspiracy. 8)

Des Moines also ranks #1 in the nation in per capita consumption of Jell-O.
That is a far more telling statistic.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

Considering how densely populated the NYC area is, how bad the roads are, how poor the signage is, how many new drivers there are, and how rushed everyone is, it is amazing that there are not 10 times more accidents. Still, it can be a real pain riding in this area.
