I have placed my can back...

one of the two bolts mounting the cat cracked inside the cat, so now I placed the can back for not cracking the other bolt.....

I've got to find a way for mounting my cat the right way..

just check it.....

Do you think these cracks were due to NOT having the can on?

well...

without the can you miss one mounting point of the cat via the can. With the can the cat is mounted on three points, without two.....

My dealer thinks this is the reason why the bolt cracked.... I'm not sure it's the reason, but it sounds plausible......

I'll see if I can make a picture of it.

another angle

Post by motorbikemike »

I had removed my stock can a while back & reinstalled it. Then I had this idea,................I wanted to put a fishtail extention on it like an old school chopper, one of my band mates presented me with an old pair of them from an old chopper, I took both & made one for my 1150r, Ha!

Harleying it up!! Ha HA    I couldn't help myself, I;m still laughing everytime I think about it. It actually sounds better than just a tip too! HA
& as to the cracked bolt, I used a hanger I made from flat iron & mounted it to the can mount with a short cap screw.

The Dutch want to make some noise ;-)

Post by Marc Rocks 2 »

Hey,

I am new to the Rockster scene, just bought mine 2 monthts ago.
Not new offcourse. It's the bronze/orange one, with 27.000 km so far.
The first thing I really wanted to do is make a bit more noise. :D
I informed at various shops but was blown away by the prices.

Offcourse I surfed the internet and came across this subject.
I am very interested in doing this Can-Off fix but I am not that technical. I have read the complete thread but am wondering what the exact steps are to accomplish this modification.

Few questions:
- what should be the exacht diameter of the chrome exhaust pipe?
- what is the order in to do the various steps?
- what should I be carefull off?
- and what s'houldn't I do?

Hope you can help. I am not that technical  but are very willing to try :!:

Kind regards,

Marc

Marc...welcome aboard..and congats on the Rockster.. :smt023

Taking the can off is something you can do yourself I'm sure..here's what to do...first make sure it's all cool and not still hot.

First loosen the clamp that holds the can to the cat..it's like a big hose clamp that has a chrome heat shield attached to it..you can make it quite loose without anything falling off.

Next remove bolt that holds the can near the rear pillion footpeg..when you remove this bolt just hold the weight of the can and lift it off the cat.

That's about it...the can should just slide off the cat without any problem..you will be surprised at how heavy the can is..don't drop it.. :D

I would then attach the clamp that you undid first to the can..and attach the bolt to the can also to keep it all together...and stick it on a shelf.

You can now start up the bike..you will be surprised at how quiet it still is..and what a nice deep sound that it has at idle..you can ride it like that..I would ride it like that for a while and see if you really want to leave it like that before buying a chrome tip for it.

The chrome tip is more a look thing..you can ride up to a local auto shop or exhaust shop..they should let you try a few different tips on to see what you like..a nice chrome tip should only cost about $10 max..I think the size is 1 3/4"..it's a fairly common size for car exhausts.

Depending on what type of tip you buy you should buy a clamp the right size to hold it on..any exhaust shop should have one for only a few bucks.

Good luck with it...and let us know what you think...Mine's been off for 5yrs now...I still love it...and my can will stay on the shelf.

Thanx!

Thanx DJ.

That should help! I am gone give it a try next week.
This week my job is taking all the spare time

I will keep you all posted on my experience.
Will keep an eye on weight shifting, stability, fuel consumption etc.

I don't exactly know what the DB regulations are in the Netherlands.
And I have to find out what they are in Germany (going there for almost a week in May).

Thanx again.

Greetings, Marc

Greetings, Marc
Would you, or who ever the next person is to remove their can, please do this. I'm really curious about this whole weight shifting discussion:

1. With the stock exahaust still on, on flat ground, have a friend hold the bike steady, completely balanced, not leaning to one side or the other.
2. Measure the distance from the end of one of the bars to the ground.
3. Rock the bike side to side a bit, balance it again, and repeat the measurement. Do this about five times.
4. When you get your stock can removed, go back to the same flat spot of ground, and repeat the measurements again.

List the ten measurements you got so we can see if there's any significant difference in the measurements before and after removal of the can.

If there's a significant weight shift, the first set of numbers should be different than the second set.

You will not notice a difference. I have run with full system, sans can, with Two Brothers, and now complete Staintune. The handling characteristics of all are the same.

you will, however still be losing weight. You just will not be able to tell as far as what you are concerned about.

I wish we could have that for the driver as well 8)

Next week the can will go off. I will let you know what my experiences will be.

Can someone tell me what exactly the shiny shield is that is shown covering the connection between the cat and the chrome exhaust tip (look at the pictures on page 1 and 2 of this thread)?

Thanx again.

btw marc...that shiny shield is that is shown covering the connection between the cat and the chrome exhaust tip is the heat shield from the stock can..it's also the clamp that holds the can on...once it's on it looks like it's a part of the can.

Well, obviously the fridge is enough weight that it will make you go down the road leaning, but is lack of a can? Some people have put their cans back on cause they said it changed their handling, some say it makes no difference, I just want some facts. Theoretically there should be a small change, I'm just curious if it's measurable.

Well, no... The balance of the bike is also measureable, which is what would be indicated by an actual before and after measurement.

As an exaggeration, if you put a 100 lb weight on the seat, the weight of the bike changes, but the balance doesn't. But if you took that same weight and put it at the end off a three foot bar, and attached the other end of the bar to the motorcycle, the motorcycle would no longer be in balance... you would have to lean the bike away from the weight. In other words, the more weight you add or subtract and the further away it is from the center of gravity of the motorcycle (on a horizontal axis) the more the bike would have to be leaned to compensate... You would be going down the road straight but the bike would be leaning toward one side, because you've shifted the overall center of gravity. If the center of gravity shifts you have to compensate by lean... When going straight, the center of gravity always has to be centered above the contact patch of the tire.

The thing about removing the can is, it's heavy, but it's also very close to the center of gravity for the bike. So, it doesn't seem to me that there should be a noticeable lean to the bike when it's removed. That's what the measurement is for.

Trust me. You can not tell the difference. There just isn't enough there have any noticible effect.

On a 320lb MotoGP bike, this would probably be noticed. Keeping the weight low is one reason the pipes are now as they are on the racers.

On a 540lb bike, such as ours, it just doesnt make a difference. Even if I were to do your test, I am figuring the difference would be measured in maybe a few mm. MAYBE. And, that is at the end of the handlebar. I am not going to, because i would have to put the cat back on, and just dont want to do that. (Hassle)

There are only advantages to taking off the exhaust, be it just losing the can, or switching out the whole system.
