Dash Protection
Does anyone know where I can get a pad or some kind of protection for my dashboard or upper tripple tree? ( The area around the ignition ) My keys are starting or mar it up.

Had the same issue on my R11R and an easy fix is to head down to your local hobby shop or fabric shop and get about a half a square yard of vinyl or rubber. Some of them come with an adhesive backing and those are the easiest. Simply cut a pattern and apply it. If you can't find the ones with adhesive backing you can use rubber cement and it works just as well if not better. (Can't believe they haven't done anything about that at BMW yet--don't their test riders have a full set of keys on their rings like the rest of us?)

Hornig #80063 carbon fiber top yoke cover. About $10 from http://www.eurotechmotorsports.com. I have one on order.
I had some Fellows universal screen protectors (for pda screens) and cut out a nice clear plastic overlay for the area around the ignition switch. Looks good as it is clear plastic, and you have 10 other protectors in the deal. Keep the backing for the first one you cut and you have a template for later cuts.
The stuff is too thick to work properly with my Treo, but is great for non-touch screen applications like GPS screens etc.

I put this stuff on my tank up from the seat all the way to the gas cap.

I plan on using it in the area you describe to protect against key scratches.
In the meantime I take the bike key off my belt loop clip and use only it as I recall when this happened to me on my RT.

ordered a bunch more from Griot's this week. They have an AWESOME detailing tool kit.
More importantly - they sent me the wrong item and told me to keep the mistakenly sent item PLUS they will send out the correct item along with a free spray bottle to use the mistakenly sent item.
I would rank that with EXCELLENT service.
Oh yeah - pretty much every order you get an additional freebie item. The size of the order depends on the size of the freebie. I just placed an order that was over $135 and they threw in another 35 ounce wheel cleaner.

I'm using the BMW Neoprene key pouch (~$7), just enough room for my key and a small UGDO. It's soft enough not to scratch the dash.AllanCook wrote:I use the key fob included in the box of swag I got after I bought mine. It's the only key on it. No problems.
Let's hope the link works:
