Foopeg lowering?
Anyone tried anything yet - and feedback.. I've seen several solutions out there. I'm geting some leg cramps (low seat).. and am thinking of lowering the pegs an inch or so.

I've only seen the Suburban Machinery kit as a definitely-fits-R12R, though based on their comments anything that fits R12ST ought to do.

I had a Verholen kit on my R1150RS - beautifully made, a little tricky to fit (but a great how-to on the RS board). Can't see a Verholen that says it definitely does the R.

I've read about this solution by a guy called Mike could be worth a try:
There are peg lowering kits available for my bike and they are indeed expensive. Being a frugal type I looked for another solution.
Turns out that there is a popular solution amongst sport bike riders. The footpegs for a Buell XB9s have a built-in drop of at least one inch (probably more for a BMW since they tend to have thick rubber treads). These footpegs can be easily modified to fit a wide variety of bikes. The part number for a pair is N0006.1AD. Do a web search and instructions and illustrations can be found. Best part is they are cheap - only $34 Canadian! I'll be doing an install on my R1100R over the winter.
I had a look at the footpeg mounts on a F800ST at the dealer before discovering this approach but from what I recall and from examining photos since I think that there is a very good chance that the Buell pegs can be adapted easily.

This is just a suggestion, and everyone is different, but...maybe consider getting a taller seat. I am already scraping the peg feelers on my footpegs and can't imagine them being any lower
I am of the opinion that anyone with a new bike should put between 3,000 and 4,000 miles on it before they start modifying things. But that is just me.

I also wanted a bit more legroom and first went the XB route, see here: http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=10457
Just a couple of weeks ago I changed over to the Vario Pegs, as I wanted rubber pads on the pegs. The rubber pegs are not yet available, but I got a prototype from Chris @ http://www.eurotechmotorsports.com, he's a super guy to deal with. You can see the pegs at his website, or at the manufacturer's site: http://www.mfw-wolf.de/en/products.shtml.

There is a reason I have the low seat.. I'm short. If a taller seat had been useable - I wouldn't be asking about dropping the pegs. I do have about 3,500 miles on the bike now - and about 35 years of riding, so I have a reasonable idea of what I want.Mr. Average wrote:This is just a suggestion, and everyone is different, but...maybe consider getting a taller seat.
FWIW - I don't tend to scrape pegs. I don't do track days and if you're scraping pegs on the street - it's just my opinion - but you're probably going too fast. I'm a big believer in never ride faster than you can see.. so my cornering is slow in and somewhat less-slow out..

Even with both lowered pegs i have yet to scrape a peg (of course i came from a Harley, so i'm not used to even leaning this far
).
I have scraped my boot, if i've been riding with them pointing somewhat down. I now slide them back on the pegs prior to the twisties and no problems.
Don, do you have a bench grinder? If so, the XB peg mod is a 30 minute switch. I did it one morning just prior to going out for a ride. It took me longer to get the spring back in than grinding them down.

Actually - I have a complete machine shop I can sometimes use.. but was waiting to hear from someone who did it. Glad to hear the springs can be used - that wasn't clear from the photos of them on the Buell.OlyVR wrote:Even with both lowered pegs i have yet to scrape a peg (of course i came from a Harley, so i'm not used to even leaning this far).

Would you happen to have any pics of them on your Roadster? If so - I'll probably order them ASAP..
Thanks!

To each his own my friend. Sounds like you have it sorted out very well. Good luck with the lowered pegs.deilenberger wrote:There is a reason I have the low seat.. I'm short. Well, with a machine shop you'll be all set.
Unfortunately I never took a picture of them on.
When you mention ordering them, do you have a Buell dealer close by?
Reason I'm asking is that I just looked at the link I provided in the other post and they went for $56
(mind you list price is $25.60)
.

I saw that also - and think there is some profit to be made here buying them from a Buell dealer.. and reselling them on Ebay.OlyVR wrote:Well, with a machine shop you'll be all set.

No dealer really handy to me - but ordering them on-line is easy anyway. Had hoped for a photo.. but since you don't have one - one question:
Did you get any additonal/annoying vibration through the pegs since they apparently don't have any rubber on them?

Don,
I don't think I really noticed an increase in vibration.
I wanted the rubber pegs more for grip than vibration.
I really want to hang on to mine, as I'm not 100% sure I like the vario pegs, but if you're not sure, I can offer this:
- I'll sell you mine for $35 - if you like 'em, great you got them for what I paid incl. S&H plus shipping costs to you.
- If you don't like 'em, send them back and I'll refund you $30.
Rgds,
Oliver

Don,
Your nearest dealer is right in Lakewood. http://www.harleydavidsonofoceancounty.com/

They have a row of Buells bring your digital camera and snap a few pics, but be careful they are desperate to sell them.

I'm still thinking Suburban Machinery.
The Verholen R1200ST kit says it can't be used with the sidestand. If they haven't made one for the R-ST, I can't see one coming for the R-R too soon. Pity, coz Verholen quality is very, very good.
Sure, I'd prefer not to have my left foot 38mm further out, and I am also a centre-stand-always guy (courtesy of years with airheads and bricks which suffer from too much sidestand use). Still, there as times and places where the sidestand is preferable or necessary.
I do (idly) wonder if the R1150RS Verholen kit would fit the R12 ... it also had the left side set-out to clear the side-stand. But I s'pose if that would've worked, Verholen would've done it by now. (and then ther's all those pesky linkages, longer brake bolts etc)
On the upside, the new Suburban Machinery kit looks to be well made, and it's certainly a price-point above the model I considered for my R1150RS, so maybe they've put in some extra machining and QA. I also don't mind supporting a company that has invested in a solution for a relatively low-volume bike. Bespeaks 'commitment'.

I just took delivery of my R1200R with the tall seat. I immediately installed the Suburban Machinery peg lowering kit, and it now fits my 6'4" frame perfectly. One of the most comfortable bike I've ridden. I also took off the peg spikes so clearance is not a problem so far. But with just 25 miles on it, it's still to early to tell. The Suburban kit is top quality and easy to install. Instructions were very clear and easy to follow.

Thanks for the report, Ray. The quality of this kit (at least in its web pics) does seem better than the kit I considered for my R1150RS: gald to hear it confirmed.
My Bike's delivery date has come forward 4 weeks, so all the "maybes" just became urgent. I ordered the SM kit this morning - it's urgent because I know my knees will complain immediately with the low seat (I'm the other end of the height spectrum). Also easier to get feet on and off pegs around town (lotsa steep, cambered / inclined streets near me ... a slow foot can mean a dropped bike).
The other end of unkinking my knees will be a decent seat for touring, maybe a Sargent, probably closer to standard 800m seat height. I've used a two-seat approach on my F650CS since BMW dropped prices on replacements seats - the low seat gives round-town confidence - and will with the R12R too. Barbacks will complete the picture.
