Does your bike have a rapid ticking noise?

Post by Dauntless »

My bike has this rapid ticking noise that is driving me nuts. My 1150R didn't do this. It's coming from the jugs. Is this normal? Sometimes it goes away for a second. Will it go away after a while?

It is a faint noise but definitely noticeable. Sounds like a sewing machine.

I saw (but now can't find, even with google) a 'fix' for a ticking sound coming from the throttle butterfly valve on a hex head. Hornig or boxer design, I think - but I still can't find it (haarumph).

IIRC, the pics showed a small pin or screw with a cover, fitted on the intake just before it enters the cyclinder head. The text suggested some hex heads had this ticking sound this was a fix for it ...

... but I may be losing my marbles and this was an oilhead fix (doubt it). If I can find it I'll post a link.

My r1200r makes a ticking noise. It doesn't seem "malignant" in any way and I'm not concerned (which doesn't mean that I shouldn't be!). I recall that my R1200GS made the same ticking though (I sold it) and so it doesn't bother me.

Sounds as if you're hearing either rocker/valve noise - or fuel injector noise. Clean injectors do make a nice ticking noise, as will valves that are getting due for adjustment.

See if the 600 mile service clears it up.. they do a head retorque and valve adjustment at that initial service.

+1 on the rocker/valve noise. This bike is so quiet that you hear the mechanical noises of the engine much more than other bikes. Mine "ticks" a bit but nothing is out of the ordinary or unexpected.

Caroanbill you where talking about this fix: http://www.boxer-design.us/Tickerkiller.htm
Looks like no marbles where lost then

Personally I think it's just the valvetrain you are hearing witch is pretty normal on most bikes.
