covering a problem?

Post by seisouso »

So last month I took my 04 r1150r in for an 18000 mile service. Paid the $500+, brought it home. The bike is my daily commuter, so I do a lot of stop and go riding. I notice the bike runs a little rough, and occasionally when I pull in the clutch to come to a stop the bike dies, even when fully warmed up. I also notice the ABS whine is not as consistent as it used to be when I'm holding the brake at a stop, and the lights seem to dim when I pull on the brakes. (The bike could've been doing this all the time but I wasn't paying attention beacuse I wasn't paranoid about it dying). I start riding the bike all the time with the fast idle switch engaged ( don't know what it's really called), but I'm a bit concerned so I take it back to the dealer that did the service. They assure me that the idle is just set too low and they turn it up. They say that the electronics on the bike tax the alternator, which puts additional stress on the motor, which then dies because it is idling too low. This sounds reasonable, and I have no doubt that this will fix the problem, as I have been self treating the problem with the fast idle switch myself. What I am worried about is whether this is the real problem or if now we're just covering up an underlying problem. The bike idles around 1000 rpm now, and I'm not sure if this is normal or a bit high. It might be my imagination because I never really did pay attention to the idling rpm, but it feels higher than it used to be pre-service. I want to believe the service technician, as they're all really nice guys, but I'd feel better if you guys gave me some confirmation that we've done the right thing. Sorry if I'm a bit verbose, thanks for any help you guys can give me yet again guys!

Isn't idle supposed to be around 1100??

The only thing that occurs to me is to check the tension/condition of the alternator belt.

Maybe do a TPS reset procedure.

And I agree with Rice....1100 rpm idle.

My R1150R has idled around 800rpm since I've had it.Now done 12,900 miles. Never stalls when warmed up. I like that low speed chugga chugga.

It sounds like a low idle to me too. Personally, I like the idle a little lower than what's called for, and compensate for when it's cold with the fast idle thingy. I have the fast idle thingy adjusted to about 1600RPM when engaged.

Thanks for the replies. I feel better about the whole situation now. I never knew about the tps reset thing though. I did a search on it and found some easy instructions for it. Would the dealer have done this during the 18k service? I'm assuming it won't hurt to do it again even if he did do it. I think I'm going to do it myself just to be safe. Thanks for the peace of mind guys!

The owner manual calls out a warm idle of 1100 +/- 50 RPM. Sounds like your R was idling too low. Now that it is up in that range, sounds like everything is OK.

TPS reset... is that the 'reset fuse; roll throttle wide-open a few times' procedure?
