Exhaust Extension for R1150R? Saddlebag Heat Is A Problem.

Post by PA R1150R »

The left saddlebag on my wife's R1150R gets very hot. I've shimmed the muffler toward the tire for additional clearance, and lined the inner half of the bag with two layers of foil faced insulation. It still gets hot inside.

Does anyone have information on or experience with an extension to the stock muffler end cap to keep the exhaust gases away from the bag?

I know that Excel Cycle & Machine Werkes makes one for the R1200GS.

I put heat proof silver foil insulation on the outside of the pannier where the muffler is closest, and no heat inside what so ever.
I got mine from a car place, it is used on the floor pan above the cat convertors. Self adhesive type.

No Bag Heat Problem

I also have the reflective tape and I have no heating problems at all. All the way to Daytona and all the way back a few weeks ago . . . no problems.

The insulation inside the case is the wrong side. Too late then. It needs to be outside to prevent the heat from hitting the case, not trapping the heat between the insulation and the case.

I agree with auto shop heat pads. There are several varieties of this stuff, and some it is rubbish that looks ok but does little.

On another side to this, I never had a heat problem with my stock case. Seems odd as there is so much clearance. Might be different if you have removed the cat - That's a problem as too much heat gets to the can. which then overheats.

Is the rest of your exhaust system stock?

I have a full Remus system, and the clearance is minimal.
The stuff I used was genuine General Motors floor insulation used above cat on Commodores.
I fitted it, went for a hard ride, stopped and opened pannier straight away, and no heat at all.

If you mean without the can?...it's still pretty quiet..just like with the can..just a nice deeper note...try it..it only takes a few minutes to take the can off.
