HUD on the R1150R

I just put a Heads Up Display from SportVue on my bike. Since there is little information about it I thought I would put it here if any one was interested – I have no relation to them.

I have an 04 R1150R and decided that I wanted a HUD and integrated into a radar detector. It took about 2 hours to mount the unit – I am slow at it. The only permanent intrusion was 1 wire tap to a switched positive lead. I am using a ZTechnik mounting bracket on the handle bars for the radar detector. I really also think that his bracket is very well made and ideal for the bike. It too is worth the money.

I was not sure the HUD would be a toy or actually useful. So far, I love the speed, gear indicator and radar indicator from it. I have found that I do not use the instrument console much. It does help solve the radar detector and the gear indication issues as I ‘see’ them on the HUD. It is neat to be going down the road and seeing RADAR flashing, I not get additional information but this is enough. I already have had LEOs stop and ask me what it was but I did not have the guts to tell them that it was a HUD and radar detector. It will take a while before I know if a ‘new’ effect will wear off but so far I do like it.

The units are well manufactured and the parts included for mounting are top notch. The helmet display has taken a little time to get used to but it is second nature now. It uses a pseudo gear indication based on RPM and current speed to determine the gear. This only works when the clutch is engaged, otherwise the gear indication may/is off. Originally, I had an engine noise problem with the mounted unit. They replaced my original with one that had additional noise filters to correct this without even flinching.

Packrat...Thanks for the post! This product is certainly intriguing.
I have some questions for you.
First, I was wondering what type of helmet you are using. It's not quite clear from the instructions on this site if it will work with flip-face helmets - specifically Nolan's N102 (which has a flip-down sun visor).
Second, have you experienced any kind of buffeting or noise while travelling at freeway speeds?
Third, which radar dectection unit are you using?

I was cautious presenting this as I do not post much and do not want to appear to be selling something. Unfortunately I have no pics. I will take them if needed but truly they are not needed. The only modification I had was with the speed sensor bracket, and they were able to provide a good picture to do that. The site is http://www.sportvue.com. I am both impressed by their equipment and by their technical support. If you use this, you will probably also contact them during the mounting.

I am using a Scorpion EXO 700 Helmet. The visor lifts like any other visor. I am not sure about the Nolan but they may have information. If the visor lifts like a 'normal' helmet, it should work. The HUD follows the curve of a normal helmet. If you want pics, I will supply them as needed for my helmet.

As for the effects of wind. I noticed an increase in the resistance with a sideways load on the helmet, eg. if I looked off of the straight, I could feel the HUD on the helmet. For normal riding, there is very little difference other than the information on the visor. When the Helmet portion is mounted on the visor, you must sand the visor and mount the bracket. It is permanent on the visor. If you decided to later not use the HUD, you will need to replace the visor. I have had the HUD up to 105 MPH in testing and had no issues. I am always concerned that it will 'break away' while riding at high speeds. They state that it is good to at least 160 MPH.

I am using a Whistler XTR 560 RD that has an external jack on it. It also allows the X-Band to be turned off, which is not used in FL. This RD presented some problems integrating with the HUD as they have not tested it. I needed to modify an adapter that they sent to use the 3/32 instead of the 1/8 plug. Other than that, it seems to work without issue.

I also have the Headsup Display unit. I got a pretyy good deal on the unit at Laguna Seca this year. I have yet to take the time to install the unit. Been busy with house projects. I have a 2002 R1150R. I was wondering if you have any installation tips for those of us in R1150R land. Did you find the instructions for installing for the R1150R model on the Sportvue website helpful?

I used this site to determine the switched power source - the green wire. Other than that, they indicated that the MSU should be mounted on the air box. I used a MSD pickup for the RPM from them. This is a clamp around the wire rather then a tap into it. ($50.00). I am happy I did this. Overall, the mounting was easier than I thought it would be. I had to remove the tank which is the worse of it.

They have a picture of the speed sensor mount for the BMW. Mine is mounted on the rear caliper bolt with the sensor touching the rear drive housing. I used the original bracket and made several cuts to get it to fit cleanly. I used a business card as a 2d template and cut where I thought I should. Once this fit right, I then marked the bracket and made the cuts. If you would like, I will try to get a picture of the bracket I made. I routed the wire from the speed sensor along the brake line. The speed sensor is the only thing that you can see.

Thanks for the info. Honestly, as many pics of the install that you have available would be great. I have studied the instructions on the website and was all set to go with those instructions but if you have a "better mousetrap" I would love to take a peek. Thanks again!

Did you get any of those pics yet? I plan on performing a few winter projects on my bike so it would be nice to have the pics as an added reference.
