Mounting instructions - windshield

Post by dubble8s »

Good morning fellow R's... I know this might seem like a bit of a stupid question, but I've always been of the mindset that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask...

Does anyone know where I can download, or at least look at, a set of mounting instructions for the touring windshield for the 1150R? I realize that, just looking at the mounts, it should not be that difficult to do without it... but I'd just like to be sure. I Googled it a hundred different ways - I figured perhaps somebody may have a BMW web address for it.

Many thanks in advance to all who can help - and be safe on the roads.
:D

I think you'll find that even the ball head isn't a great help with the upper bolts (the ones that go into the top of the triple clamp). Per a suggestion on this board, I replaced the supplied hex key bolts with standard hardware which allows you to use a socket and flex extension.
Still a PITA but maybe a bit easier.

Also, some have had problems with the wellnuts that hold the screen in place not gripping properly. The suggestion is to rough up the inside of the mount so that the wellnut has better purchase. I didn't do this with mine and have not had problems but I can see how this could be an issue

It is a good thing to use some blue thread lock when installing the shield. I have the mounts come loose numerous times until I used the lock-tight.
The headlight/windshield assembly seams to be the only weak link I have found so far after getting some miles in, most screws/nuts needing tightening and lock-tight, on my bike at least.
Good luck!

A huge Thank you to Mick Hoff, who took the time to scan the instructions for me - it is a testament to the people who share information and advice on this board. Yes, the upper bolts were a huge PITA - I actually took a hex and cut it down short, right after the elbow where it bends, with a dremel to get it to fit - but it came out great. Thanks again Mick, and everyone else who offered their help.

I found the fix for this but unfortunately I don't have pictures. The problem is the bracket is too long where the bolt goes through on the upper right bolt (if you are sitting on the bike). I took a bench grinder and ground the bracket down where the bolt goes through to make it shorter and it went in without ANY problem. I'll try to doctor up a picture to describe what was done.

I tried blue thread lock on the upper right side bolt of my touring shield. It came loose after 4k miles. I just put red thread lock on Sunday. Will put a note on the board if it ever comes loose. Red is "permanent" grade. If red doesn't work, I'll go to black.

Also try a 40 mm bolt instead of the supplied 35 mm one. That made the difference for me. (Quite by accident -- I lost the original one when it fell out some where.)
