tax disk holder

Post by placey »

mine's on the front of my left cylinder head and is looking a bit shabby. it was probably shiny psuedo chrome when new. i'll be re-newing my tax tomorrow and will have a look for a better holder - but then thought that i bet some people on here know what's best...

so where's it best to mount said holder do you think? and any tips on decent holders?

these rocksters must be pretty reliable if all i have to worry about is where to affix the road fund licence.

I guess this is a more UK-specific question (isn't US stuff on the rear "licence plate"? )

Mine was on the left-hand cylinder when I got it, in a cheap chromed holder with a screw on lid. I've since moved it to the bottom of the left fork - there's some kind of hole down there already that I've got an allen bolt into from the inside, which looks quite neat.

I'd prefer to keep stuff like this away from the wheels ideally, but I think I'd have more serious problems anyway if anything big enough to snap it comes up by the forks/wheel...

I chose a neat tax-disc holder from Oxford Products, bought at Infinity. Mine is the carbon one, but I'd prefer the steel one instead as the carbon version is only strong 'in one direction' and I've snapped mine quite easily. It also has cheap allen screws which have churned a little, as you need to slacken them all to change the disc over every year.

Okay, okay! So the bolt is on the outside today... I've just renewed & changed my plate over from the car, so waiting for a new disc too!

The only other good places I could find were around the back, but would be obscured by the pannier - other places were likely to get bashed by a boot etc. The DVLA website isn't very specific, but the general form is that tax should be displayed on the nearside / left.

I can tell you where to stick it ...

I've put my (Oxford carbon) tax disc holder between the exhaust hanger bolt and the frame, angled so it's clearly visible through the footrest hanger. Doesn't seem to get too dirty (I ride in all weathers) or to affect exhaust hanger bolt performance in any way. First sign that the bolt was working loose would presumably be the tax holder drooping to a less than respectful 45 degrees 'attention'. Followed by the silencer falling off ... Only point to watch is that with the tension in the exhaust system the big allen head bolt can be a pain to get back in. Solution is to back off the bolts holding the hanger to the can a little (JUST a little), refit the big bolt into the footrest hanger, then re-tighten. Worked for me and has been OK for the last 1k miles. Oh, and I park up in central London every day and the traffic wardens - sorry, parking executives - seem to think it's position is OK. If I get stopped for an 'into the cones' DVLC roadside check I'll post further.

PS - why DO dealers ALL stick the tax disc holder on the front of the left pot????? And why so cheap and nasty? My last Honda (sorry) had a better one.

PPS - watch out for me on the A3, Putney, New King's Road, Sloane Square, Buckingham Palace Road, Sanctuary. The only other Beemers I ever see are GSs.

Haven't had mine long enough to need taxing, so had to remind myself where it is - like Hirsty it's on the front left fork. Unfortunately my tax runs out next month, so that's another few bob to find.

Just a thought - anyone had a tax disc nicked? I know it used to happen, (and may still) but I haven't heard of it recently.

Cheers

I'd like to do as Chipko does - on the end can bolt - but this would be obscured by my nearside pannier on my packhorse, I presume you racier fellas don't let yourselves get weighed down like that ...

My pal Glenn at work had the tax disc stolen off his mega-scoot in London last year, you now also have to pay for a replacement yourself sadly. I don't think that they ever get checked in detail unless you're in real trouble, so a cursory glance at the colour/date is probably enough for the scumbags to evade attention.

The Oxford holders with all the allen bolts look like they'd deter a casual thief, though it'd come off altogether easily with a good kick - you can't win.

I do that route (peel off onto the Embankment) every day.
