2002 Trade in Value
Went to trade in my 2002 R1150R abs, cases, tank bag -dealer offered my $5500!
Its only got 14K miles - hell I thought the bags alone were worth $1K.
I wish they had not changed the bags on the new GS, that makes our side cases value drop as well.
Comments?
PS:Thinking about a new GS.....

Remove the cases and sell them on eBay.Zanotti2 wrote:Went to trade in my 2002 R1150R abs, cases, tank bag -dealer offered my $5500!

Good Trade
That's a good trade value.
Works this way: Base value new 12990 minus 6 years depreciation (calculated that way whether we like it or not) equals 58% or $7500 loss of value due to market. That is roughly 10% per year -- not unreasonable rate.
Value of accessories at trade: $0.00 That's the U.S. market forces at work.
Real world system cases for R/GS style is $300-450 used. Sell separately and get that out of it.

I haven't done enough bike-trading to know how it resembles car-trading but I would bet it is pretty close. (I sell, then buy) I just sold a used Toyota truck for around $11,500. Trade-in value would have been about $9,000.
Sounds like the dealer is not far off. Delay gratification and sell the accessories and bike seperately and go in with cash, you will do better.
I learned long ago not to trade vehicles. Unless you like dropping your pants and bending over!

yeah, what he said!! Dealerships of most anykind I am familiar with are there to make money for the dealership. You will never come close to getting a real world value for the bike since thats what the dealer is gonna ask for it. I betcha $10 if you were to do the trade, you would see your bike sitting on their floor with a price tag of at least $6500, +$500 if the bags are on it. Sight unseen, thats about what I would be willing to pay for such abike in good shape with proper maitenance records.wncbmw wrote:I haven't done enough bike-trading to know how it resembles car-trading but I would bet it is pretty close. Throw up an ad in the Buy/Sell section here if our Great White Northern T-shirt printing board member end up not be interested. Also try http://www.ibmwr.org Flea market section. I spent alot time in both spots when I was looking for a bike. Take some good pics of the bike and price it realistically. It'll sell. The GS will wait for ya. Good luck!!!

I was thinking that it may already be too late. Hence the disappointing trade-in value. I bet most dealers are going to be discounting the last "new" 1150's in the coming months. Plus i think we are already past prime time this summer for sellling a bike.iowabeakster wrote:Something else to consider, the Roadster's replacement is about to hit the market. That will only hurt the value, so if you're going to do a trade, you better hurry.
I bought my 04 on Aug 11th 2004. BMW was giving $1500 discount off MSRP.

I would like those cases
Zanotti2, If the units are in good shape I'll give you 50% plus shipping for the cases.

I would, but the dealer specifically wanted it with cases.Catapult wrote:Zanotti2, If the units are in good shape I'll give you 50% plus shipping for the cases.
I think I will wait until the new 2007 GS's come out. They are supposed to have better brakes, mechanical rather than servo, and new ABS. Also, the black might be nice.
I suspect that the 07's will be out soon - I have seen th beginning of some discounting around.
Remember, I live in Florida - so the bike "season" is a little reversed!

Zanoti2....
Is the $5500 dealer offer what he will allow as trade on the GS?. If so, are you paying retail for the GS?
I would pressume that the GS is an 06, then get him to sweeten the deal a bit on the 06, since the 07's will beforthcoming and he would want to move the 06.....you'll get the deal.......if not go to other dealer.
Let us know how you make out.
