Goodwood Festival of Speed 2006 (many photos!)

Post by Mike UK »

Once again it was the annual pilgramage to the Festival of Speed. This is one event I try not to miss every year.

I decided to arrive early to miss the crowds and it was worth getting up at 5:30am as I managed to see many bikes and cars without the usual hustle.

I took plenty of photos and a selection can be found here:

http://r1150r.smugmug.com/gallery/187562/34/80796758

Smugmug has done an excellent job of loading them at random, so I apologise for the disjointed nature of them all.

Highlights for me were:

The wholeday!

Seeing Troy Corsa, Randy Mamola and Charlie Boorman.

Being invited to sit on Barry Sheenes 1975 RG14 500cc GP bike.

Standing behind the Ducati Desmosedici while it was revved up.

Standing next to the Renault F1 car while it was revved extremely hard...it hurt a lot.

Watching the Honda events team carefully unload their racing history into the paddock. Everything was clinically clean and the technicians constantly vacummed the red carpet that covered the tarmac. I even checked my shoes to make sure they were clean!!

Some photo highlights:

and for DJ........a full English breakfast at the Porsche cafe.. Is it a healthy breakfast? Maybe, maybe not, but it helped build the British Empire...and then we lost it all....should have stuck with Meusli then.

A great day. I love the relaxed nature of the event. You can mix with the racing fraternity and get extremely close to the cars and bikes as long as you didn't touch. If anyone visits the UK in futue in early July I would highly recommend this event.

Mike...I also see that a couple of other Aussies were there including Mark Webber,Troy Corser,Casey Stoner and Chris Vermuelin.

It looks like you had great weather for it..thanks again for your pictures..here a couple from an Aussie site.. http://www.mcnews.com.au/

Once on that site go down to July 12 news..and about the Honda stars.

Just wondering is it open to the general public..and is it only one day or two?

DJ,

it's a 3 day event and open to the general public evryday, Friday to Sunday. I like the relaxed feel of the event and most exhibits are not kept behind ropes allowing you to get really close to them, including the celebrities.

The Revival in September is a similar format except to two things: most people dress up (as the event recreates the golden age of racing in the 1950's and 60's) and it is a full race circuit next to the Goodwood estate. I went a few years back dressed in tweeds and my wife in a genuine 1950's dress with all the accessories. We even met Barry Sheene! See the link below.

Look out for something in the post box in the next few days.

No worries mate. A clue...when the package arrives, just break open a tinnie, sit back and put the volume on max......
