Rockster DAMAGED

Post by lokiwong »

Thanks to the dry grass on the corner, I slided down my rockster this morning.

Sport Integral Helmat and air flow jacket works well! I didn't get hurt.

The engine guard did a good job, the engine seems OK.

But, the fuel tank was damaged. The handle bar was bended. the right handle was damages too. That's the result.

My bike is now in BMW's repair center. I knew they sell parts in crazy price.

Do you think my fuel tank can be repiared? or has to be replaced?

lokiwong...gees that's bad luck....they should be able to fix it up ok..I'm not sure about the tank..my guess is that it can be repaired...good luck with it.

Do you have insurance that will cover the repair cost?...glad you are not hurt...I have a helmet just like that...is that damaged also?

In my city, no insurance company provides service for repairing or stolen motorcycle. We only has thrid-party insurance.

I hope that the fuel tank can be repaired by pulling or something. Otherwise, I have to pay about US$2000 or more to replace and repaint it. That's really bad...

Jeez mate...sorry to hear! :(

Okay...#1...your tank? Gonna have to replace it. You could indeed probably get the dents pulled out but......the paint.....it special! lol It's this new formula from BMW that is applied at the factory and cannot be replicated. I know...I tried....

I dropped mine (in my driveway  ) and went round and round with the insurance company as they tried in vain to have the paint matched back to original. They even got one of the most reputable painters on the west coast (Al Martinez's son) to attempt it and he failed. See..the special matte finish is specially formulated to resist stains, fingerprints, etc, and while they did come close on the colour..blue speckles and all, it was not a match and they had to choke the cost of the replacement which was the recommendation of the tech in the first place. Check with yours and I'm quite sure you'll find the same. Tank + decals runs about $1,700 pre-painted and shipped from Germany. BMW won't even provide the dealership with the paint codes!

The handle bar? Replace it as well...bout a hundred bucks....mine was also bent and it's better to replace and they can bend it...but it's practically impossible to get it all the way right.

Very glad that you're okay and that you were geared up!

Hope this helps....

Illuvatar,

Thanks... Didi you get hurt?

That's expensive. I think that's the reason that most of the riders in my city choose Japanese bikes. I think they can fix the same problem 10 times cheaper than this one...

Well..... I learn a lesson..... I have to ride it very very carefully....

Glad to hear you are ok..

I wonder if they can bend out what they can on the tank and then bondo it smooth? I think perhaps the inside is coated to avoid rust, that might be hard to reseal if its been compromised.. In the end after the body & paintwork, its probably cheaper to just buy a tank.

How fast were you going?
Right turn or left? (appears to have been a righter)
Did front tire tuck or rear wheel lose traction?

Just curious.

Nah mate...only my pride!

I had set the bike halfway on the driveway...half onto the grass....BOOM it said when it fell over!! The dent in my tank came from the left hand grip as it was pushed into the tank.

And yea...pretty darn expensive...it's a good thing that when you get insurance here, they require full coverage as long as you're making payments. :P

Bummer

Should be able to get it repaired though, and you're OK.

A specialist body shop will do a tank no worries.

i think if you made the mistake of dropping it, you shouldnt be going thru your insurance.

your stupidity makes everyones rates go up.

just my take on it.

single650,

The repair center told me that they don't have confident to fixed the tank as good as new. They cannot make the correct color also...

They told me that the only way is to replace it. It is about US$2300 in my city....

Boxer,

Actually it was not fast when I dropped on the road. I think it is about 50km/h. it is a right turn and my front tire lose traction because of the dry grass. I will try to make it slower next time...

Lokiwong, try one of the UK BMW people, Moto-bins, Motorworks, or sherlock (google them for the site) they are very helpful and specialise in new and second hand stuff. The also ship world wide. See if they have a second hand tank from any RR then get it painted. Matt black should be fine but you'll need the proper Bronze stickers, they'll probably do them too.

There are specialist tank people but fom HK that might be too much hassle.

Good luck
