Riding as a bicycle fundraiser race escort!

Post by wncbmw »

A local motorcycle message board I am a member of put out a call for motorcycle riders to assist a local charity bicycle race. I volunteered, thinking it would be a short little thing. Turns out it was a 100-mile race! And a 62 mile race. And a 50-mile race. And a short 20 mile-fun ride. But it was a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, so it was worth it.

The first 16 miles was shared by all four rides and my job was to post some warning signs just before the start and then patrol that section with a first aid kit, tire repair kit and to provide assitance to any riders having problems. I have to admit it was fun working my way thru the field ala - the Tour de France motorcycle guys. Although due to the nature of all the riders, motorized and pedaled, I gave them a much wider cushion than the crazies working the Big Race.

After the riders had all cleared my section, I basically just rode back and forth along the rear of the ride as it progressed, looking for riders needing help. Since things spread out as the race went on, much of the day was a high speed run along nice mountain back roads, with the occational pack of riders or stopped rider. Fortunately, my first aid kit remained unopened, I had a blast and the cyclists seem to appreciate the scooters patrolling, prepared to assist. I rode over 200 miles for a 100-mile race.

But I didn't have to pedal, just gas up! My hats (helmets?) off to the guys and gals that rode the whole thing. Some of them really struggled at the end! I already volunteered to do it next year. :)

If any of you ever get the chance to help out a bicycle race, do it! I must have commited 564 moving violations today, some in the presence of the cops helping us and they just waved! :P
