Need suggestion on repairing tether strap for system case

Post by scottybooj »

I snapped the tether straps from their insertion points on my system cases. I let the bags open with a heavy load in them and they just couldn't take it.

Any input as to how to re-attach? Is there a low-temp way of fusing the two plastics again? Do you need to use industrial adhesives?

Thanks.

I guess the repair is going to depend on how much material was damaged. Is it possible to insert a photo here ? I would guess it's repairable with an adhesive repair or glass re-enforcement.

Try to find an auto repair shop that has someone that can plastic weld (hot gas (air) type). I'm not absolutely certain, but I think that the system cases are abs and/or polyethylene. I've seen some great plastic weld repairs to polyethylene, polypropylene, ABS, and polystyrene. I would also imagine that a welded repair would be significantly stronger than an adhesive based repair on either the lid or bottom piece of the system case.

good luck,

Without a photo it's hard to visualize exactly what you need to repair but if it's a matter of fusing plastic together, I'd take the case over to a TAP Plastics store if you have one nearby. They can look at your case and tell you what type of adhesive you need.

taosports,

Looks like a west coast store. I see they have two stores in my area though if I have a plastics problem.

That's a good idea..but the original problem is that short strap in the upper right in the last pic..the one that stops the lid opening too far..am I right?

yes, dj, you're right. I don't have a problem with the bungees to restrain the inner contents. I have a problem with the tether strap made of nylon webbing that 'snaps' in to the case.

i guess i will have to get the two parts to chemically bond but i don't want to affect the lid underneath and have it deform.

You're right. Scotty evidently tore the anchor points for those lid stop straps

One of mine is broken at the snap connection as well. I've lived with it long enough so I just bought the OEM replacement strap...Big hit on the wallet though. $18

Tether Strap Fix

Post by P_Jensen »

Scotty;
I think you are taking about the mounting tabs on the cases and not the strap. If so the back page of the May 2006 Motorcycle Consumer News has a product review for a product which repairs plastic. The kit consists of Plastex Resin and a activator to create the weld/bond. It also includes a mesh reinforcing cloth to strengthen the joint. The article does not list a web site but does include a mailing and e-mail address.

The review was done by LT Snyder to repair a mounting tab on a fairing, and he says it has held for over a year. The kits cost $11.95 for a small and $26.95 for a standard size in a single color, Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I'll give them a call. I precisely did what you described. I sheared the mounting tab right off the inside of the lid.

Here's a simple solution that requires no plastic repair. Simply drill a small hole in the top mounting, and run some safety wire (I used picture hanging wire) through it. Your broken plastic will never trouble you again.

Here's a pict of my left case after I suffered a similar failure and came up with the drilled hole idea:

Here's a pict of my right case:

Here's what you do at the bottom: wrap the retaining wire in a loop inside the tether rivet:

Just on the inside, or did it pull the outside of the case with it ?
