Please help, its sunny and she will not start!!!!
Hi all, I am new here. I have been riding for 16 years, this is my first Beemer. I bought the bike 2 years ago, I do most of the maintenance myself. I sure hope there is a simple thing I missed and will be forever embarrassed. She is a 2002 R1150r. I put her away late fall, took a spin in the middle of the winter and she sat neglected for a few months. I replaced the battery and now she will not start. I twisted the throttle to allow the motronic system verify throttle position, she will run for about 3 seconds at extremely low rpm, and that’s it. If I touch the throttle during this three seconds, she will quit. any suggestions?

Hello,
Did you put any STA-BIL into the fuel tank last fall before you stored it? If not, I believe you have a tank full of stale gas. Although I have never heard it mentioned on any motorcycle forum, you might try a little "starting ether" to see if that works. But use this stuff very sparingly because it is not called "explosion in a can" for nothing. It is highly flammable and too much will also wash the oil off the cylinder walls. I use it on lawnmowers and weedeaters but it might be inappropriate on a motorcycle. If I was desperate, a little sprayed onto the air cleaner probably would not hurt but be ready to crank the engine pretty quick after spraying. This stuff evaporates very quickly but if your motorcycle starts and runs better with it, you know what your problem is.

Stale gas is a good guess, but you might also want to open your air cleaner and check for any mice that have made themselves a nest in there over the winter. Yes, I'm serious. When a bike is left unattended for long periods they'll crawl up the air inlet duct and fill your airbox with all kinds of soft things for bedding, which of course does nothing for the bike's breathing...

Hey everyone, I fixed the problem. The BMW hose clamps leave much to be desired!! I had one fail last year that soaked my right leg with fuel, this time one failed inside the fuel tank. The hose that is connected to the fuel filter let go, this provided enough fuel to trick me into thinking all was fine in that area, but under pressure, the fuel just escapeed back into the tank. I changed the filter while I was in there, not a fun job, but not too bad either. (It is kind of tricky to get the pump out of the tank without damaging the pickup screen. Keep an eye on your clamps!!!!
