private purchase - warranty question

Post by sojourner »

I am currently looking at buying either a 2004 ABS: r1150r and r1150r rockster (both from individual private sellers). Since both bikes are 2004 year, I am interested in transfer of warranty.

I am under the impression that the warranty is for 3 years / 36 months.

Is this correct?

Is it from the date the original purchaser purchased the bike?

Will I get grief getting going to a BMW dealer for warranty work (hope I won't have to try that!). I would be going to either: touch of class in Phillipsburg, NJ or Hermys in PA (I think Port Clinton)

I am planning on making my decision on which bike to purchase by tomorrow at the latest, so any imput would be really appreciated.

Thx!

I believe so, and my Rockster is a 2004, but was purchased July '03, so my warranty is almost up(3 months).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

private purchase - warranty question

You're correct. And, from personal experience, there is no problem transferring the warranty to you. I got my slightly used 04 in 04. And the warranty, which has been honored for recalls, will run out this summer. Switching required nothing more involved than a phone call to BMW.

Warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles from original date of purchase, unless the bike was a official demo bike. No warranty transfer is needed. When a dealer reports a warranty claim all BMW wants to know is the VIN of the bike. They don't care who owns it. Only good reason to register as a new owner is for recalls, so they know who to notify.
