Valve adjustments

Post by bono1151 »

I have a 2003 r1150r with 28000 miles on it. The last time the valves were adjusted was at 12000 miles. :) The bike runs great, is it necessary to have them adjusted or checked again? If so can any competent mechanic accomplish this task?

yep, many threads on this subject, check this board. Best directions are at advrider.com. In the Wisdom section on the bottom of the main page, its called OVAD, also buy a Twinmax so you can synch your throttle bodies afterwards. Easy to do, its fun, you learn something new, feel more comfortable with the bike.

good luck,

This is a DOC file on the board under Tech Tips & Reviews

Some have done it Bill's way from these directions. There are some minor differences others have chosen to make. For instance, Robbie suggests leaving the plugs in as they can dislodge carbon grit which could fall into a valve seat and cause a false reading.

There are at least two ways to find TDC, and both are equally as accurate, as far as I know.

If they weren't adjusted/checked since 12K, you might want to do that just to set your mind at ease and become more familiar with your bike, since it IS easy to do. Chances are they won't be much off if at all, but you need to make sure.

No carbs it's fuel injected. No you don't have to remove the tank to do a sync or valve adjust.
