stripped windshield mount

Hi everybody, I have not posted since the old board moved to this one, but I paid up & now I'm a donating member. as Homer Simpson would say & I quote "Whooo Hooo!"
I have enjoyed this site & my Bike very much over the last few years. I am recently divorced now & have been goin through a few CHANGES!
My post is a question, for I did search the archived threads & found nothing, but I have stripped a top mount for my touring windshield & remember something about different mounts for it that attach to the handlebar mount. Does anybody have any knowledge of this & if so please point me in the right direction! ( I made it through the entire winter without it!)

Hi MBM,

I took a look at my mounts and can't quite figure out where you could have stripped a mount. Are you saying that you stripped the thread of the hole into which the mount is bolted? If that's the case, the easiest and cheapest thing would be to buy or get a tap (rethreader tool) and retap the hole to the next bolt size up. The mount itself does no have threads; though it may need to be drilled out to accomodate the larger bolt, it should be doable.

If I misunderstood you, could you post a pic of the damaged part? I may have a replacement if you want it.

I had the same problem a couple of years ago. A steel bolt going into aluminum threads creates a problem if not started carefully. Instead of going the cheapest rethreading rout I went with a Parabellum Scout fairing. Although this was probably the most expensive solution, IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ve never had any regrets.

I had a the same problem with mine, I restored the threads with a tap thread restorer and insested a longer( about 5mm) stainless steel bolt from the hardware store. I found that only the first couple of threads where messed up. It is a pain to get to the upper mounting holes so I could clean up the threads. You want good access because you only have one shot at cleaning up the threads, after that it will be retheading time. The stock bolt only goes in for about 1/4" the new bolt will double that and hold much better. My local hardware store had stainless steel allen head bolts in the right diameter and length.

I ground of about 1/8th inch of each end of the bong that the bolt goes through, I couldn't even get a slightly longer bolt to get past that peice of metal that is in the way. The right side gave me the biggest problem, If I ever do this over I'd buy one of the small Givi fairing/windscreens. The BMW setup just SUCKS

thanks everybody, I KNOW I saw a top mounted mout , I just can't remember where I saw it. I will work on a solution & post my results soon.

Heya every body & thanks Soggy Bottom! I did what you did & ground some meat off of each side of the bolt collar & gfained a quarter inch of the stock mounting bolt into the hole & going deeper than my stripped threads. Thanks for the idea, it seems to be real tight, on with the tests, time for a test run! Thanks again!
